It is Called Air Mail Special.
It was recorded at Buddy Spicher's studio in Nashville, and mixed by Calvin Vollrath in St. Paul Alberta. Calvin Vollrath and Buddy Spicher became good friends at the Emma Lake fiddle Camp in Saskachewan, where they are the featured fiddle players.
When they decided to do a a swing CD together, Buddy Emmons was their first choice on steel. (Can you blame them?)He didn't disappoint them.
I've listened to it for almost two weeks now and it gives me the warm fuzzies all over.
You can obtain a copy by e-mailing Calvin vollrath at calvinvollrath.com or Buddy Spicher at buddyspicher.com

This is a GREAT CD and no surprise either. Calvin is a dear friend of mine and played fiddle on my last CD, which I might add , some of the best fiddling in the business and when he told me he was teaming up with the two Buddies (Spicher and Emmons), I knew this had to be one of the greatest CD's to come out in a long time. Calvin is also a special down to earth person on top of that, which makes him even better in my mind.
You've got to hear these guys play, man are they hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buddy Emmons and Buddy Spicher also recorded an album in '77 called "Buddies". That one has a couple swing tunes, as well as a couple of pop and country numbers. Lenny Breau and Bucky Barrett do the guitar honors.
I have the album, but it would probably do pretty well as a CD, too! |

I'll second that one, too, as Cal is an old-time friend and player buddy of mine. His life-long dream was to play and record with Mr. Emmons which has come true. Kudos also to the other lead players on the CD, Mike Dowling on acoustic and electric guitars and Paul Kramer on electric mandolin. Calvin has been an inspiration to us in Alberta and I love it every chance we get together to play. Here's a CD quote from Mike Dowling:
If you've ever had the notion that whatever fun was to be had elsewhere, you wouldn't trade what you were doing at the moment, you know exactly how I felt during the three days I spent in Nashville participating as a sideman in the Air Mail Special session.
To describe this as simply a twin fiddle album wouldn't begin to do it justice. Buddy Spicher and Calvin Vollrath, two of the finest fiddle players I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, have produced a CD that takes fiddle harmony playing to a new level. The tasty violin solos, twin single lines, and Bob Wills-style "over and under" sounds are stunning enough, but you'll hear something else on this fine recording that your ears may not believe - Buddy and Calvin each playing two parts simultaneously. The resulting harmony on many of these tunes is a sound so full, so compelling, you'll think you're listening to a jazz fiddle quartet.
Add to the mix the great Buddy Emmons, whose phrasing and musical ideas long ago transcended mere steel guitar lick, Paul Kramer on electric mandolin, Taylor Coker on bass, and Jim White on drums, this band was as tight, as locked in, as musical, as any I've ever had the privilege of playing with. It was a pure pleasure to be included in this session and I couldn't be more proud of the result.
Give it a listen and I think you'll understand why I wouldn't have traded those three days at Buddy Spicher's Fiddle House for anything.

I got hold of a couple of Mr Spichers albums a few weeks ago. They are The Nashville Swing Band, one titled Western Swing and the other Swing Time. I've been listening to these two albums for the last two weeks and it's got quite a bit Of BE in there. It's the first time I'd ever heard him use compression and use it he did. Four or Five Times appears on both albums and his playing is superb with a ton of compression. There is an excellent version of You're Nobody till Somebody Loves you on the Swing Time album. Some of the best Swing stuff I've heard. |
