So, our band is finally booked for a gig after an 8 month hiatus. It's my chance to finally present the steel to the masses of unsuspecting innocents!

I would ask for suggestions, but most you guys have a very distinct advantage: you play with musicians! Our band does not count on the musicianship or professionalism of any of our members!

It's more of a punk rock/instrumental surf type band. Sort of like the ventures meets the ramones... So, rather than expect myself to sound great or even acceptable, I'll settle for my distortion pedal having new batteries

Of course, I'm only half joking about this stuff. I'm actually very excited to have the opportunity to play with my steel.

I've been trying to post a congratulations forever! Probably when I look, there will be four or five identical replies from me.

Anyway, I'm very excited about this, a steel player in a punk-surfer band. Please make sure and post after it happens--if you make it out okay!

I'm excited for you -- and I have to ask: What's a Japanese dude doing in Mexico City (besides playing steel for a Latino punk band)?

You'll be able to really spread your wings on this one. No expectations.

I was the only musician in a punk reggae band once, on lap steel. They loved everything I did. Enjoy.

Go for it, Kiyoshi! I sometimes play pedal steel with a rockabilly and roots rock group that plays with punk volume and energy. It takes guts (and a Fender Super Twin Reverb), and you really have to put yourself out there to keep from being left behind. Let them hear what that steel can do.

Hey everyone! thanks for the encouragement. This gig probably won't be very ground breaking in terms of steel guitar work. Mostly I've just re-adapted all my previous guitar parts to the steel, so it's mostly single note stuff. The rest is just rythm guitar parts... Thank god that boowah pedal has a power chord on the bottom strings!

Al,

I wish I knew! My dad came here after WW2, married and settled down. There's actually a considerable Japanese community down here, but they stick to themselves mostly. They even have their own school!

Anyway, our band takes advantage of the oriental motif, it's like our gimmick, so I'll probably get lots of compliments on my playing the koto...

a plug for my band:

(in the pics, I'm playing the thinline telecaster).

Hey, if they know what a Koto is around here but don't know what a pedal steel is....! Well, they'll find out now.

Didn't you have a "noticias" page in your site before? Can't find it now.

Congrats on the new gig, I know you'll have fun and they'll love your steel playing.

Kiyoshi,,

I stay in fairly close contact with our local Punk, and Metal bands in our Tri-States area, have been asked by a couple to do some steel work with them,,just haven't got the nerve up yet!!! Don't know if my "old geezer" ears could handle the volume, LOL.. Any way,,,,,,,

GO FOR IT, AND HAVE FUN!!!

Kiyoshi -- wild, man. Was your father in "camp" prior to Mexico City? My wife's Mom (maiden name Miyake) was in Manzanar and her Father in the Arkansas internment. Anyway, I don't mean to change the theme towards a dark area, but am interested.

Website looks great! Wish you the best of luck. Remember, it's only rock and roll... Bansai! Bansai! Bansai!
