I am a new PSG player (or attempter, rather) in the Richmond, Va., area. I would love to get out and watch some local pros do the things that I am trying to learn. I am well acquainted with the rock community in this area, since I own an interest in the town's best (MHO) recording studio. But hardly any country music gets recorded there. Does anyone know of any band playing in this area that has a good pedal steel player?

Hey Craig, I don't know if I'd be classified as "good" but I have been playing a long time on the dang thing. Anyway, I'll be on steel with the Trailblazers at the Moose Lodge in Williamsburg on Saturday night the 26th from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. It's on route 60 and not far from the outlet stores. If you can possibly do it...visit with Jerry down at his gig. He is a great player and is diversified enough to keep your interest. He has a lot more in him than classic country and while I don't know how far his band goes with it...I do know that I always enjoy listening to him play and on occassion we get to jam a bit together at some of the local steel guitar jams. Thanks Ray, you're just saying that because I use one of your $325 pack seats which by the way if anyone is interested is the best dang pack seat on the market. I'd rather someone stole my steel than my pack seat! Hell, they could even kidnap my wife and ask for ransom which I wouldn't pay but if they kidnapped my pack seat and wanted ransom, I'd have to consider paying it!! Walker Seats Rule!!!.....JH in Va.

Consider joining MASGA- the Mid-Atlantic Steel Guitar Assoc. Ray or Jerry can hook you up with the current president... (I'm "inactive" at the moment.)

I don't live there anymore but there were quite a few good steelers there in the mid-70's. I met Bruce Bouton while taking lessons from Teddy Lloyd at Hull street music which was run by another great steeler Ray Garrett. I saw Teddy at Steelin for the Hearts a couple of years ago and I think he was still playing out at the time. I can't believe there is nobody playing around there anymore?

Jerry, I am going to try to get down to the Moose Lodge on Saturday night if the weather is bad. (If the weekend weather is decent at all, I will probably be trying to finish building a barn in Appomattox...) But now that I know you are playing in the area, I'll get out to see you sooner or later. Thanks much--I'll introduce myself to you when I make it.

I play steel for the Honky Tonk Experience. We will be at Poe's Pub on Main Street in Richmond on Friday night. I know most of the steel players in the area and I could probably hook you up with these guys.

OK Craig it looks like you are on your way, there used to be so many good steel players around Richmond it was inconceivable to me that there are none now. Hull street music is long gone, I am sure that whole street has been urban renewed or is heading that way now. Even in the mid 70's it was mostly pawn and porn shops and empty store fronts.
Had lots of fun hanging out there though, Dave and Ray Garrett are good people, hopefully still around somewhere.

Hey Randy, Do you know a fellow in Mechanicsburg by the name of Dean Luck?? He is a great singer, I worked with him at the Old Dominion Opry in Williamsburg for a couple of years. Good guy and good friend but I have lost touch with him.

As Jay has alluded, the music scene in Richmond is gone. Wifey and I were there for a few days a couple of years ago, and not only could I find no one who could recommend where we could go in the city to hear some good country music, we couldn't find <u>any</u> live music, period! One resident said she thought there was one rock joint left with live music, but she couldn't recall the name or location, she had only heard about it in the hotel. I found the lack of live music there surprising, having known how big it was there back in the '40s, '50s, and '60s.
