I hear so much talk about tone on a pedal steel, here's a brief little excerpt of what I would call a very different, but still perfectly good, tone. See what you think. (Note: I haven't "doctored" it any, this is right of the CD.)

To me it sounds like Paul Franklin playing in the style of Reece. I don't think it's him, but that's what it sounds like. The tone is very cool. Almost stratocaster like. I like it.

Sounds very good to me. With my limited hearing ability, I still must ask ... in what way is that a very different tone? Also I assume that is your playing? Jim

I think that the Tone is very good. Whoever it is? What is different about it? Most good players get a good tone, in my opinion.

It has a hollow sound similar to those old sho buds, but even more hollow. Almost like two pickups in what I have been told is incorrectly called 'out of phase'. Pretty different to my ears from what you mostly hear these days.

Beautiful. It sounds to me like the strings are very taut. It also sounds like a short-scale instrument.

Is that you? To me it sounds kinda like one of those Fender Sho-Buds with the "ash tray" tuners.

The technical aspect of your playing sounds supurb.....clean.........BIG FAT CHORDS....
however, "the sound" in my opinion sounds EXACTLY like when we used to use the "PLASTIC" covered bars that were wanna-be popular back in the 50-60's.
Nothing wrong with it all....but THAT is "the sound" I hear; a slight muting of each note.

Donny, you of course are correct. It is a great tone at least to my ears, I love that sound. Sounds like all the mids are pulled out. It reminds me of Jim Murphy with some of the highs also removed. Great playing too. Please enlighten us as to who and what.

I'll take a wild guess and guess Tom Morell playing a pedal guitar.MSA maybe? To me it sounds nothing Like Franklin's C6th pedabro.A western picker fer sure.

No, I've changed my mind.Not Tom.This cut is not that old.Cool tone.Mids rolled out,compressor,I have no idea.But I like it.

Bobby, it actually sounds quite a bit like the electric sound of a C6th pedabro. I don't think it's Paul, though, so I factored that out.

That's Jim Loessberg playing a 1964 Emmons Wraparound with Doug Collins; and recorded through a Nashville 400 and I'll tell you the amp settings; but then I'll have to kill everyone..ha...

I gave it another listen.I hear the Pedabro connection.But to my hears it sounds like he could have a pick-up mounted near the rollar bridge.But I'm thinking Matchbro with most of the Dobro effect backed off.I don't think Jim was going for the Pedabro sound.Just something different.But we can always ask him.Nice job Jim.........bb<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 16 March 2005 at 10:41 PM.]</p></FONT>
