Are any of you "Steel Players" using the Fostex MR-8 Digital Multitrack Recorder? If so what are your comments?

Don, if you can go the extra, I agree with Mike. That 16 track Fostex is wayyyyy better. It's a real nice outfit and the price did come down on them. If I'm not mistaken, I think you can even record 16 tracks simultaneously.

I was looking hard at all the "little" machines, and I ended up buying one of the new Tascam DP-01 hard disk recorders. The biggest objection that I see to the MR-8, which it shares with the Boss BR864, is it requires an addiction to minidisks, which aren't cheap and apparently don't hold much information. The MR-8 is supposedly really picky about which disks work too, you can't just use any old camera disk. There's a lot of reviews at Harmony Central: http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/#man
As with all Harmony Central reviews, user discretion is required.

I'm about to buy a Fostex VF80EX. Built-in effects, built-in CD burner. JAckson Music, in New York, has 'em CHEAPER than the 499.00 that Musician's Friend charges. Gives you 8 tracks, XLR inputs, and phantom power, too. Call 1-800-616-5390. It's a real music store, with a bunch of guys who know what they're doing, and are as nice as they can be!
And this is NOT a commercial!

I also use a Fostex VF-16. It is not the most user-friendly device but it has alot of capabilities.
