Guitarist Nils Lofgren was in the house recently at the Mesa, AZ steel guitar show, though he didn't play. Mike Smith introduced him from the stage and announced that he had recently acquired a pedal steel and invited him to come back and play it next year. Nils suggested that coming back to play 6-string might be a better notion... I hope he does it next year; it would be fun to hear him!
p.s. He looked a lot younger than I expected for a guy I grew up listening to on Neil Young records, etc... |

I believe that Carter was on the HBO special "Springstien at MSG" .
The song was "Mansion On The Hill", but not the Hank Williams song of the same name. |

Nils is indeed young looking but no stranger to music, "Grin" was one of his early groups out of the Washington D.C. area and sometime after he hooked up with the "Boss" and the rest is History, There is a neat book called "Capitol Rock" which gives some detail about local bands in the D.C. area also further info about Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, The Cherry People, The Night Hawks and other groups..

Hey Jim,
Just got back from vacation and noticed your post. I'm not sure when Nils actually took up the pedal steel, but I think it's been several years now. Yes, he has been playing some live on Bruce's tour and I think he said he'd also done some recording on steel as well. He's a tremendous musician, writer and vocalist and I was thrilled he asked me to play on his new CD (not out yet). I had assumed he'd just play everything himself...glad he didn't.
Mike P.S.; I'm going to try to talk him into playing both guitar and some steel at the show next year. |
