Hey Jack:
I'm certainly on the list of steelers who love bassfishing. For about 12 yrs. I got deeply into the tournament thing up here in the northeast. Now I fish a couple tourneys a year only but go fishing for fun as often as I can.
Three yrs. ago I bought a new 21' Xpress (metal) bassboat after having glass boats ( 18' Rangers and 20' Champions)for years. I have a 225 Optimax on it and I love the rig. It's white... to match my truck of course.
Biggest LM I've ever caught was 8lbs, 7oz. on a spinnerbait in Ok. while I was on the road yrs ago. Biggest LM here in the northeast was 7lbs 1oz. on a jig & pig on Copake Lake here in NY. My best SM was 6lbs. even from Candlewood Lake in Ct. on a suspending, gold Rogue which I caught the day before a tournament while practicing !! Too bad but it was fun anyway. The next day while in the tournament I took a 6lb 10oz. LM on the same lure. That is the biggest bass I ever weighed-in in a tournament.
The boat is all covered and winterized right now and we have freezing rain. Too bad 'cause now I want to go fishing....
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |

Bud Charleton, when I knew him, was an avid basser, and I'd reckon he still is.
Myself I like Walleyes over any other eating fish, and haven't been fishing for them in years.
They've got some bigguns out here in the Columbia. |

A good fish story !!!
I haven't been fishing for a long time , although
I live on a bay here in the north west with a dock in the
front yard - one day I was working on my boat at the
dock , and an Otter shot up out of the water on to the dock
and he had a small Halibut in his mouth - I guess he was looking
for a place to eat it - but when he saw me , he took off leaving
his catch behind - So we ate it -- nice fish to !!!

Jack:
It was back in the early, mid 80s and my friend Bob Wood, owner of Del City Music took me out bass-fishing. I think it was Shawnee Lake. Could that be right ?? I know it was east of Okie City not far from the interstate.

Tiny, Bob Woods was also a friend of mine, and it might have been "Thunderbird" Lake where he took you. Bob was a friend to many musicians and died an early and untimely death. His business, Del City Music, is still open!

Gene & Jack:
After hearing the name I think you are correct about Thunderbird. But I think we also fished a place called Shawnee once as well. Bob's son-in-law, Larry James went with us on one fishing trip.
Bob Wood was one of my favorite people I've met in my life. I met him in the mid 70s at a show we did at a drive-in theater. We became good friends and remained so even after I left the road and moved back to the northeast in the late 80s. He treated me like a member of his family.
After I left Nashville for Texas when I went to work for Gene, Bob would occasionaly hire me for session stuff and gigs up in Okie City. Not that I had alot of time off back then as Gene was so hot. Bob always made it more than worth my while though. He was always giving me a new, musical toy to try out too. Whenever we were doing a show in the area he'd come by the hotel and pick me up and we'd go do something fun. He was a true friend to me and many musicians. He was an honest man.
I'm sad that he's gone. But I'll bet he's playing music and bass-fishing in heaven now.

23 1/2 inch LM, lake of the Ozarks, on my wedding day, Oct 31,1988. My memory of that fish lasted longer than the marriage! I let the fish go, should've kept him and released the wife! JP |

Unfortunately water leaked into the camera and ruined all the shots of the fish I caught that day. All that was left was this one shot of me holding up the bait . . |

I'm primarily a bass fisherman. I caught several over 5, but nothing to write home about. I did catch a 10 lb. walleye out of Devil's Lake in North Dakota though. It was exciting. |

Walleye is excellent eating. The best fish sandwich I've had was deep fried walleye from a small restaurant in Minnesota some years back. |

They (walleyes) are good Jack. Probably the best eating freshwater fish IMHO. We've got some nice ones here in the Mohawk River along with the Smallmouths (and some Largemouths too.)
I'll only keep one walleye per year for eating. And all bass get released. I'm a die-hard, catch-and-release guy.
BTW... I know that John Hughey, Randy Beavers and Hal Rugg are all avid bass-fisherman. So we're in good company.

Jerry used to fish. We both did the tournament trail for many years. I still do. He has now quit and just has fun playing and teaching music to our 10 year old grandson Austin. Jerry's biggest fish was a 10 lb. largemouth bass. Donna |
