I have done some crappy band recordings but I did my first honest to goodness for-hire session tonight. One song, most tracks already down, a punk band wanting to do one 'sensitive' sort of ballad. I'm an anxious sort of guy and I was pretty gut-butterflied but I was reasonably prepared. The people couldn't have been nicer and we were able to communicate well enough---I made it real clear that I would be glad to hear any wishes and ideas from them as to what they might want to hear that was different than I was doing--after I did one take. Well, I nailed it in one. But I had an alternate idea for my entrance so we did a couple of more tracks to give them some interpretive options on the final mix. And I requested one more run-through just because--hell it's digital and there are eleventy-seven tracks to spare. Their concept, and I know that this is not uncommon, was for me to play straight thru the whole song and they would form it up in the mix. Certainly not the way I think of doing music but it's their deal. I defer to the producer.
Bottom line--they were extremely happy and therefore, me too.
