when a tab is shown like this, say with string's 5&6 on fret 3 or whatever
5 5a 5a
5b 5b
my question is this . how many time's would the picks come into contact with the strings

would it be 3 times or 2 times or maybe even just once

i am not sure if i pick just 1-2 times and bring in the pedals as the strings are ringing...
thanks calvin

Unless thre is an indication of a "slur" or a line connecting the #'s, consider that each entry is picked independently, For example, if the tab showed 5-5A-5 then you would pick string in question(in this case usually it would be the 5th string or the 10th string) only once engaging the A pedal after the pick then releasing it while the note is still ringing. Or- another example- 5A-6A-5A would still be picked only once - pick the string at the 5th fret with the A pedal engaged- slide up to the 6th fret - keeping the A pedal still engaged- then back down to the 5th fret while the note is still ringing.
