Hi everyone,
I just bought the excellent 'Look What Thoughts Will Do' double cd. Great music but not much in the way of liner notes. Who played steel for Lefty, was it mostly one player or different people on different cuts?

Years ago, someone told me that Curly Chalker played on some of Lefty's early recordings. |

Although it embarrasses me to do so , I will bring back this thread for the greater good... I've got that double-CD, too, Matt, and asked my questions in relation to various songs on that collection. It's a great collection, isn't it? |

Weldon was on many of his last recordings. Look for a tune called "She Found the Key" |

Ask Buck Grantham. He did one tour on lead guitar with Lefy. He might know some of the players. Jody. |

Curly Chalker didn't appear until a May 24th, 1951 recording session where the songs recorded were:
1. How Long Will It Take(To Stop Loving You)
2. Always Late (With Your Kisses)- this is the song where Curly created a steel lick that is still associated with Lefty's music.
3. Mom and Dad's Waltz
4. You Can Go On Your Way Now
George McCoy, Herby Hall, Paul Blunt, Ernie Harvey, Dale Gilley, Harland Powell, Bob Meadows, Don Helms, Johnny Siebert, Marian Hall, Wayne L. Add Ernie Harvey to the list of steel players that played and toured with Lefty. Ernie was from the Biloxi,Ms. area. We called him the man with a thousand fingers-that is how good he was. He is missed, as is Faron.

Thanks guys, always a mine of information! I'm really enjoying this cd set and there's so much great steel playing on it. The playing on 'Always Late....' stood out immediately, thanks for the info on that session Tommy. |

This is an interesting tidbit of steel guitar trivia: that lick is also the lick that Joaquin Murphey uses to start his composition "Steel Guitar Jubilee." So the question is, did Murph get the lick from Curly, or vice versa? Both men are gone, and both would probably say the lick originated with himself, if I know steel players.
My own theory is that Curly heard the Smokey Rogers cut of "Jubilee" with Joaquin, copped the phrase and played it at the Lefty session. It worked on "Always Late," and became the more famous lick for that song. "Jubilee" faded into history, except in the repertoire of a few lonely steel players.

That is an interesting little bit of trivia, Herb. I'll have to try and locate "Steel Guitar Jubilee" and give it a listen. And,... I agree: both would probably claim creation of the lick.
The steel players I listed above are the ones listed on the recordings where information was available.
The list is sure to grow larger when you add steel players that worked the road for him. One being: Jimmy Day.
There is no telling how many played for him when he started using pickup/regional bands, after the initial "glory" years and he quit carrying his own band.
Smiley Roberts told me of a time he worked a show with him.......(see I didn't forget, Smiley).
I hope I didn't lead this thread too far off topic.
