He was on fire with a four piece band, no guitar player joined by a couple members of the Sawer Brown band and a few tunes. RR played a six string on a couple of tunes, then went to the bass, and finally the drums. The drummer for the band also played the PSG and all in all they put on a hell of a show and had the undivided attention of the crowd including me. It's not for the hard core country fans that listening to nothing else but you can't deny the man can play and hold up his end of the bandstand to say the least.

I was there, too. I was actually more impressed with his soundcheck. They jammed for about an hour, and it was great. It was cool to see a pedal steel on the Uptown Mix stage

Not my cup of tea either. He is good at what he does though.

It all floats my boat if it's done well. There's more to steel guitar than just country.

Hey Frank.Floataphobia is a band out of Seattle.Has twin bangers.

I finally got to see this guy on Austin City Limits and although I really enjoyed the playing and the show the entire Family band put on, I guess I was expecting to see a monster player on steel. I challenge anybody to do this... go back to the master tape and add distortion to the licks Paul played on pick it apart and then tell me you REALLY believe this guy is that good. No disrespect intended because like I said I really liked what he played and that is really all that matters when you hear the music..kudos to him for what he is doing, I wish him the best.

well a good friend recently saw RR on a live show..not sure which one..he said he was really ccol and enjoyed it..but then he said..

"his Steel didn't sound anything like any other Pedal Steel I have heard and I noticed he never used any pedals during his playing, just a lot of sliding"...he equated him more to Duane Allman on the 6 string rather than a Pedal Steel Player...

I just said..ok...good, glad you liked it and thats pretty much the way I see it as well...

RR is certainly a rocker ..he's got that down for sure..I don't think RR is trying to capture the hearts of the Mash Pedal B crowd !

It is pretty funny that RR uses a 13 string steel with the full complement of pedals. I've only seen him on Austin City limits and I didn't see him touch a pedal once!

He does have a good command of pentatonic scales on his steel though. I wonder what his tuning is?

I heard RR in an interview on NPR once and he played a quick B pedal type fast country lick- so he does know how to do that sort of thing as well, although you never hear it.

IMHO, RR could do what he does just as well on a 6 or 8 string single neck non-pedal steel, but I guess his 13 string Fessy is flashier looking, and he is used to it and likes the tone.

One thing I appreciate about him is the energy he puts into his playing. My wife always jokes about how most photos of steel players in action look like they are asleep at the steel...

RR is still a kid in his 20s, so I don't think you can compare him to masters who were playing pedal steel before RR was born. I like hearing his R&B/Gospel played on steel, with or without the pedals.

But I just heard Tim McGraw singing with Usher on a Hip-Hop hit. Uh-oh.

Alright guys, It was a good show and the crowd loved it. There was a ton of energy, and he grooved his ass off. I don't understand why some people need to add their negative feedback on RR. I'm 22, and I like seeing a guy in my age range connecting to my peers. And because of him, when I say I play psg, my friends know what I'm talking about.

Well said. And because of this everybody on this forum ought to be happy for RRs success, regardless of whether he sounds as they would prefer or not...
