The “Ralph, you’re fired!” thread reminded me of a conversation I had with James Burton a few years ago. I asked him about the seamless trade-offs on intros and turn a-rounds between Ralph and him on many Merle Haggard tracks like; “Tonight, The Bottle Let Me Down”, “Drink Up And Be Somebody”, Where Does The Good Times Go” and many others. I pointed out that the tone and phrasing of each instrument made it’s hard to tell where one instrument ended and the other began. Before I could ask him if that was intentional, he blurted out “we got that pretty close, didn’t we?”. I’ve always loved those intros and turn a-rounds and it was nice to get the inside scoop.
