Does anyone know of a company that sells high gloss black Formica? I've looked at Lowes, Home Depot, and a couple of counter top shops, but I haven't been able to track down anyone who has a high gloss black. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Aaron. I would like to know myself. I'm looking for a black sparkle mica for my new steel.

I don't have the answer to this either.

I do know, that installers of Formica say that the reason they don't like gloss Formica for counter-tops is that it will show scratches much more easily than matte finish. A simulated granite pattern in gloss finish will not show the scratches as easily as a solid color.

If you cannot find a gloss black Formica, you might try getting a small sample of matte and see if it can be buffed to a gloss finish with a fine buffing compound and an orbital sander. I would bet that it can.

Good luck, Rick

Sorry, Rick, that definitely won't work! The color-coat and top-coat on Formica and Wilsonart Micarta are only a couple of thousandths of an inch thick, and though a really fine scratch or scuff might be buffed out, you can forget any serious buffing or compounding of these products. Been there, done that. I have seen the matte finishes top-coated with clear gloss (automotive lacquer), with good results, but it tends to chip and scratch pretty easily. The gloss black finishes look great, but they show every fingerprint, scratch, and speck of dust. I think some of the textured products would look great, especially the multicolored ones. If I worked on the road a lot, and ever built my own steel...it sure wouldn't be gloss black!

Check out this website. I have used red sparkle on a sierra and green sparkle on an msa. It is easy to glue down and is awesome looking. I got tired of confusing my guitar with my kitchen cabinets.
