Dear Friends,
I have posted three new MP3 soundfiles on my personal website:
www.austriansteelguitar.at.tf
On the "Sounds" page I have added three great tracks from the late 40's:
T. Texas Tyler with "Tex Tyler Ride" with Noel Boogs on Steel
Tex Williams with Joaquin Murphy and an unbelievable version of "Texas Playboy Rag"
Wade Ray with Freddy Tavares (Steel) and Porky Freeman (Guitar) and "South"
Have Fun!
Kind Regards, Walter

That particular Joaquin Murphey performance floors me everytime I hear it;
On any instrument, that would be transcendant, brilliant, and inspired. Knowing it's done with a heavy steel bar in the hand makes it just plain other- wordly! |

Walter thank you for your time and trouble. However I still can only hear 1:19 of the Murph song. This hurts because Joaquin is my favorite of the old time players. He played a lot like Buddy Emmons played in the late 50's.
The problem has to be on my end.I've tried to reload it several times. However will only play 1:19.I also tried to delete the first file but it want go away.I'll come up with something.Again thanks for sharing this with all of us.Regards Bobby |

Joaquin Murphy !
This is the first time I ever laid ears on him. Holy crap! Sounds like Django Reinhardt on a steel guitar!
Thanks for the earful!

Walter,
I have always enjoyed Joaquin Murphy's playing but that solo at the end is over the top. He single note playing sounds more like a swing clarinet player than just about anybody..ever. Thanks for making my day!!
TC
PS Freddy and Noel are pretty dang cool too! |

Get the cd, it's Tex Williams On The Air, on Country Routes-label. Lots of other great Murph solos there as well. |

That clarinet phrasing can also be heard from Vance Terry's steel guitar on the "Brisbane Bop" record. On one of the songs ('Jammin with Jimmy', I believe) you can hardly tell that it is a steel guitar instead of a Benny Goodman-style of instrument. The tone and the vibrato are so similar.
Gee, what a bunch of steel players they are, Murphy and Vance.
