Dale Watson appeared, as did the Campbell Brothers at the mighty Wheatland Festival in Remus, MI this past weekend.

What a surprise to see Ricky Davis there, he was subbing for Dale’s regular guy Don Pawlak. He sounded great on his green and gold ShoBud LDG. The Lonestars swung hard and each song has a great arrangement. Great fiddler, too. We got to see Dale and the Lonestars play the main stage twice during the weekend.

The Campbell Brothers, Derrick and Chuck, have two totally different styles and sounds. Derrick played a Sierra lap through an envelope filter, maybe more boxes, I couldn’t tell. Derrick plays single string style and sounded way hot. Chuck plays an Excel keyless he bought from Joe Wright, he says the guitar has something like nine raises and six lowers! Chuck plays chord backup and the occasional solo. I could’ve sworn he used an octave splitter, but Chuck says he plays octaves the old fashioned way. A great backing band, too. I saw Calvin Cooke in the crowd.

Chuck was nice enough to chat with me for a while. He’s got an instructional DVD coming out.

Stupidly I didn’t bring a camera!

Drew

I hope someday that I get a chance to meet Ricky and listen to him live; what a great guy and inspiration.

Aside from being great steel players, Chuck and Darick are always more than happy to chat about steel and playing. I've always felt very welcome at their venues and enjoy their friendly hospitality.

I met Darick in Seattle--what a nice guy. Just so genuinely friendly and open. He explained his tuning a bit, and even let me play his guitar! I found the same open and friendly attitude with Roosevelt from the Lee Boys. Whatever they're doing at those House of God churches, it seems to be working...
