On the E-13th tuning (with E for the first string) would you use a .022" plain or a .022" wound string in the G# (4th) position?

Relating to string tension, would there be more tension on the plain string than the wound when pulled to G# pitch? It seems that there would be;___because it seems that the plain would have more mass than the wound. Although both strings mic .022" would not there be less mass in the wound string?

Many thanks, Rick

For a G# (208 Hz) ... The Tension (in lbs) for a 22.5" scale guitar is:

0.022 Plain = 24.25 lbs

0.022 Stainless Wound = 20.56 lbs

0.022 Nickel Wound = 20.77 lbs

A cool tool ... Tension Calculator

Well, in a day or so, I plan to experiment with an E9/13 tuning on my Fender T-8 Custom 22 1/2" scale. I plan to attempt the following gauges, and hope for the best:
.054w-E, .034w-D, .026w-F#, .022w-G#, .018p-B, .017p-C#, .015p-E, .012p-G#. If .022w doesn't get it for G#, I will probably illiminate this tuning, and settle for my C9/13. (2-tones below) I know that works very well! If you don't mind, I'll return and post these results in a day or two!

John,

Those guages look well balanced to me.

On strings two and three, E and C#, I have installed a .017" and a .020" respectively. They go up to pitch OK and the extra tension doesn't seem to be too excessive. They seem to ring a little better and the harmonics seem brighter. I'll need more playing time with this set to really know if the heavier guages are a big difference.

I installed them on a Fender Dual-8 Professional.

Well, “I'm back”, already! My new batch of strings came in today. BTW: I always use Nickle Wound. Hear's where I'm at. I installed my E9/13 like this: E-.054w,D-.034w,F#-.026w,[G#-.022w],B-.018p,C#-.017p,E-.015p,G#-.012p. I first put a G#-.011p, on the 1st., but; I think, due to the closeness of the P/U to the bridge, .011p does not pick-up very well! Therefore, I replaced it with a .012p, and that seems to have a better volume! I really like this tuning for one example: if you play the intro. to Walking After Midnight (in Key-C) I found at least 4 or 5 positions in which to play the 2nd. measure slide, and still stay on chord w/slight differences in harmony notes. I spoke to Don Helms tonight. I was going to ask him a question concerning his E tuning, but; I offered so many people to ask him a question, that I forgot who it was and even forgot the question! Sorry ‘bout that, whom ever you are! The next time, I'll write it down on paper! “Big John”
