This past holiday we were down in Portland, and in a music store, they had on display a beautiful, 7-string single neck console Ricky that had a factory plate on it saying: Jerry Byrd Model. Because it was a single neck, it almost looked like the Lloyd Green style pedal steel, because there was so much extra room. Beautiful binding all around. Horsehoe pickup, of course, strings through the body, and a plate covering the tuning gear (the keys were showing above it, though). It was not for sell, nor did I think I would have the dough for it even if it was.

That was Rickenbacher's attempt to seduce JB back into their fold from Fender that was making overatures at about that time. I got to play Jerry's at his home in Nashville a long time back; He had just finished recording his Memories of Maria, album. Nice guitar but a poor second to a Bakelite in my humble opinion.
It had the smaller pickup, thus a Fender like shriller sound. I attempted to get the owner of that guitar you saw to talk to me about selling it and was treated quite rudely. I think he's a rock and roller anyway but a really nice shop to visit.

Ray,
Ah, I've seen your name and the Portland underneath. I have no idea if I was talking to the owner, but they made it clear that the lap steels and amps up above on display were part of their collection.
What more would you want from life? You played Jerry Byrd's guitar in his own home! A shame that it wasn't that good-a-sounding guitar. Sure is pretty, though.

| We used to have a guitar store here in Jacksonville called American Guitar that had a wall full of lap steels...Rickys, Nationals, etc. Just seeing all those vintage steels up there made my mouth water. Sadly though, they also weren't for sale either. I think the owner was in the Lynard Skynard band, but really didn't play them...just a collector. |
