The original case for my bakelite panda is shot. Any ideas out there about a good replacement ?
I'm looking for something like this mandolin case:
thanks, Bob |

Bob, I bought a mountain dulcimer case from Elderly for $30 that does a great job for my supro. Heavily padded, black, external pockets and shoulder strap. |

Go to the search engine here on the Forum. Do a search in Non-pedal, any date, for cases. Click on the radio button for match any word. I got a sleu of possibilities. Some guys make them. Some modify viola cases...some recommend doing what Sierra did for their lap steel...i.e., get a gun type case...get some high density foam and cut it to fit the guitar. The Sierra set up is the best I have seen for protecting the instrument.

I agree on the gun-type case. Got a shotgun case for my lap steel and it works quite well. Got it online from http://www.cabelas.com |

If you can find a baritone ukulele case made of that common(black) nylon canvas, that might be the ticket for you. It's what I(and many others in the islands) use for my bakelight and it's great. Not as sturdy as a hard shell, and not as minimal as a soft gig bag, but a bit more substantial than what you have pictured. I wouldn't trust it to the airlines, but the simi solid sides, top and bottom have stayed strong for years. A simple modification to the interior neck support to accomodate your steels flatter neck, and a bit of side padding(towel) to keep the body from swimming, and your good to go. Good luck! |

Modern Case company makes the mandolin case and they have made custom cases for my instruments - a portuguese guitarra, a harp guitar and weissenborn. Their service during the order vs. while waiting for the order were two different things, but in they end the cases themselves fit will. I have a ricky without a case - maybe we can get a bulk discount if they're the same!!!

I've got a guy at Travelite cases working on it now. I'll post my results. I'm also looking into the Modern case company.
Thanks so much guys, Bob |

I just recieved my custom case that Rob at Dunamis Designs made. I'm really happy with the workmanship and fit--and I'm a picky dude! After a lot of searching for an original case for my Bakelite Ric, and trying to jury-rig other cases to fit--I ultimately took the plunge and had this case made--glad I did! Reasonable price too! I ordered mine with black Tolex and purple lining. Thanks Rob!

Keep an eye on ebay just in case (ooooh) those Sierra lap steel cases surface again. At $25.00, you can't beat that with NY pretzel! |

There is still one Sierra/SKB case on eBay. It appears they've figured out that they can sell them for more than $25.00 |

Russ, that's a case with wheels, and a compartment for the legs, rods, & pedal bar for a Sessions D10. [This message was edited by HowardR on 27 November 2003 at 12:57 PM.] |

I saw the big case with wheels, but the one I've linked to is a foam-lined lap steel case. They're also offering one lap steel case without the foam. |

Yes Russ, you're right. I guess the good old days of the $25.00 cases are gone.
Now I've seen long threads, but you've made this about the widest thread I've seen |
