Hi all, thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Andy and I tried to learn PSG about 10 or 12 years ago but didn't have much luck with it. Then about 5 years ago I learned to play dobro and it rekindled my interest in Steel. About 2 months ago I ordered a new Carter D-10 about the same time I stumbled onto the "Steel Guitar Forum"(I had no idea) I wish I had had access to all this back then, what a great place for talkin to other steelers and finding out about anything related to PSG, I've learned so much already just from readin, I even ran across someone on here that I had met about 15 years ago in Bakersfield (Larry Petree) and recently dropped into hear him and Red Simpson play. Yesterday (after tearing the whole house apart) I found my copy of Winnie Winston's "Pedal Steel Guitar" book and now after playin some dobro and learnin to read tab it all makes more sense to me, I'm havin a great time with it!. Thanks to all those who have helped me to better understand the most beautiful sounding instrument in the universe... |

Hey Andy, good for you. Welcome BACK to this crazy world.
Sometimes it takes a different approach or attitude as many here have taken time away ( me for one ) before hunkering down for the real deal.
Dobro and Steel, nice combination.
Good luck

Welcome to our world, Andy. With all the courses that are available, plus the forum, there is no reason you can't get it this time around. If possible, I would suggest you get a teacher, at least for a few sessions, just to check out your technique. Bad habits are hard to break, so either a teacher or a video showing you correct right hand technique, pick placement, bar control, etc. is very important. Learn correctly right out of the chute. It will pay big dividends later on. |

Welcome Andy and Ray. I've been playing PSG only since Christmas, but having a great time! Many years of guitar and teaching in my background so a lot more makes sense than my fingers and limbs will agree to do, but it's coming along.
Have fun on your guitar and using the Forum.

AAAALLL-RIIIIGHT, Andy! From Dobro to steel--that's the same road to ruin I took, after years of being a bad guitar player!
This here Forum is a good place to find out stuff, get advice, and just be entertained!
Welcome aboard. |

Your right Stephen, but I credit my dobro background to my steady progress and also the internet which gave me access to this forum, all it's members with their vast database of knowledge and willingness to help one another to learn this beautiful soundin instrument. I've progressed more in the last two weeks than I did the first time I tried to learn the steel back in the early 80's and I plugged away at it for over a year...in fact the first month of playin I actually had the finger picks on backwards...lol "man! how the hell do they play like this"? but now I have a much better understanding of music and get to occasionally play some dobro with some blue grass buddies of mine. Lots of fun for sure...
