C6th on modern recordings

How often is C6th used on modern country recordings? I would hazard to guess that it is very infrequent. Brad Paisley features some C6th on his albums courtesy of the very talented Randle Currie and Mike Johnson.

Check out any of Hank III's CDs. You'll hear Kayton Roberts on A6.

You could also check out most any of the Asleep At the Wheel recordings. Although it's "technically" not country but WS. Virtually all of the steel work in recent years whether from John Ely or Cindy Cashdollar was primarily C6 or A6.

Another place to check is the great Herbie Remington's work. He has albums out in virtually every genre, country, WS, Big Band,Gospel,Hawaiian, etc. and he does nearly everythng in A6. For a real treat, listen to his CD with Jimmy Day called "A Day with Remington". Herbie in A6 and Jimmy mostly in E9. They do some fantastic work on here, both in harmony and in backup without ever "stepping on" each other. A real standout on here is Milk Cow Blues.

I understand that a lot of Paul Franklin's work on hit records is on the C6th. It doesn't sound like it, but whenever he goes into the "rock slide" mode, chances are he's doing it on C6th.

Somebody please correct me if I'm full of crap on this.

There was also a recent run of tropical-esque tunes in Top-40 country with 6th playing, ie Kenny Chesney's No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem, and that one with Jimmy buffet and Alan Jackson had 6th I think too.
Oh yeah... It's 5 O'clock Somewhere.

It's amazing how so many of the good players use C6...and make it not sound like C6. I've seen Paul Franklin and others play something I just knew was being played on E9, but when I looked it was C6. I believe I remember Gary Hogue said that the neck was one of his biggest challenges, and for me too, it's a different animal, but very cool neck when applied well, which I certainly don't do.

It's not country music or recent, but I love Paul F's solo on "Your Own Sweet Way" on the Knotting Hillbilies record.

Paul Played C6th on both of the cuts he played on my first record, and I had thought he used a lap on Sleepwalk.....

b0b - you are right. Paul F would be the best person to comment.

What I was referring to however is commercial mainstream country. Yes George Strait does have some occasional 6th playing on his recordings, and I wish more big name artists did so too. I think it was John Hughey when intervied by a UK country music magazine many years ago who said "I love playing C6th - but it don't feed you".

I would just love to hear more C6th featured on high profile recordings to make a change from some of the cliched E9 stuff that some producers want 'just to make it sound more country'. Thank God for the innovative session players who still come up with refreshingly new E9 licks and solo's. PF, BE, Mike Johnson, Randle Currie come to mind here.

Funny you mention that B0b... I use that neck for the same thing. It's all right there, and then some.
