Your favourite steel record

Post by Olli Rahkonen »

My record collection omits almost totally records that have todays great steel players on them. And to be honest, Robert Randolph and Dire Straits On Tonight are the only steel records I have. Can you guys recommend some records that have great steel tracks on them AND are available via internet? It doesn't have to be country. I think that steel guitar is most intresting to hear in different contexts like in Robert Randolph and the Family Band and the Dire Straits.

AND are available via internet
Does that mean "available to be ordered by internet" or "available by free download on the internet"?

Dan Tyack's Burnt Toast is one of my favorites.

Lloyd Green's Revisited is a must have classic.

If you like fusion jazz, Dave Ristrim's Crisis iat the Theme Park is very cool.

Jim Cohen's Finally Here and 4 To The Bar are both top notch ; country pop and good jazz.

Alan Jackson's Greatest Hits with Paul Franklin's fingers all over it is fine, with a classic solo from Lloyd G. too.

ANYTHING Buddy Emmons recorded. All the Swingin CD's are great.

Randy Beavers Still A Way Without Words, is very nice solidly played and sounds like him... which is good.

I have heard his new one is very cool too.
As well as raves about his good friend Jeff Newman's just released posthumous CD.

Tom Morrel and the Time Warp Top Hands (western swing) is the best non pedal unless you go for Jerry Byrd (hawaiian, country and jazz)

This should keep you listening for quite some time.

Just about any recording by any of the greats (past and present). They've all got a different tale to tell.

I have two:

Buddy Emmons - "Emmons Guitar Company"

Lloyd Green - "Revisited"

I have a lot of steel albums albums, but none that are in the same league as these two by the masters of the instrument.

My favorites change from time to time. Right now my favorite is "HonkyTonkMemories.com" by the great Dicky Overbey. If you don't have this one, you don't know what you're missing!!! http://www.southlandrecords.com/overbeydicky7741.htm

You can't go wrong with ANYTHING posted here so far.

And you can get most of them from the forum store,
and b0b gets em out darned quick too.
You could buy a cd a week for a year here,
and still find more things to be surprised with.

I'd have to vote for Linda Lay's Mercantile Store CD available through Cracker Barrel. The steel playing by Ricky Davis and Linda's vocals is what country is supposed to sound like.

"Country Dance Time" by the Texas Troubabors (w/out Earnest) featuring Buddy Charleton and Leon Rhodes. This album was what initially turned me onto steel AND country jazz. Buddy and Leon's hot twin stuff on "Redtop" and "Almost to Tulsa" is still some of my favorite picking ever.

While you´re at it, Rick, don´t forget "Ernest Tubb Presents The Texas Troubadours". Rhodes-Bud Boogie and Texas Troubadour Stomp are killer stuff, then there´s their rendition of Panhandle Rag, and The Waltz You Saved For Me!
Some vintage Emmons belongs in here too, what really turned my head was Ray Price "Night Life".
Also among my favorites are Lloyd Green´s "Lloyd Green and His Steel Guitar" that was once available from Tom Bradshaw, and Jimmy Day´s "Golden Steel Guitar Hits", which got me started on C6.
Anything that Ralph Mooney played on, but for those who would like to hear him do some nice instrumentals, check out the album he did with James Burton, Corn Pickin´And Slick Slidin´.
Then of course a lot of stuff that Buddy Cage played on, if I had to suggest a single record "for starters", it might be NRPS "Home, Home On The Road", unfortunately not available on CD right now.
These are just a few, the list goes on...

Regards, JH

Bob Eaton's Decca record "Somebody's Been Stealin', My Sweet Sugar" with Jerry Byrd on steel guitar. Most likely one of the finest examples of all that a steel guitar can do for a vocalist/tune. It has superb TONE, TOUCH, phrasing, backup and lead parts throughout. No other instruments exept rythm guitar and bass.

I just bought a cd alarm clock radio. My favorite cd for beddy-bye is Bobbe Seymour's Soulful Steel. Talk about a guy whose playing can put you to sleep...OUCH! Image Very mellow, great stuff! I find his playing quite remarkable. Very fluid and complex. His steel is alive.
