Looking out our window on the 4th floor of the Harvey Hotel, It looked as if the aircraft were making instrument aproaches. I couldn't see the strobe lights for the runway. I decided to go up to the top floor of the Harvey and take a look. When I got on the elevator on the 4th floor going up, I notice a Lady holding a “Christmas sounds of steel guitar by Buddy Emmons” CD. I complimented the Lady on her choice and told her it was my favorite Buddy album. I can’t remember exactly what floor but the elevator stopped, the door opened and Buddy and Peggy Emmons got on the elevator. Some guy said, “This is the man right here”. The Lady stepped forward and asks Buddy if he would autograph her CD. Buddy got out his pen and was in the process of peeling the plastic covering off when the elevator reached his floor. Buddy and Peggy stayed on the elevator and got off at the Lady’s floor to complete the autograph and would take the elevator back to their floor. This came as no surprise to me because when I attended Buddy’s week long C-6th course in Stockton California in the early 80’s, He would patiently answer all our questions during breaks. Most of the questions were cocerning the E-9th tuning. I left Stockton feeling we should have paid extra for the gracious way Buddy shared his vast knowledge concerning any aspect of pedal steel guitar. That Saturday in Dallas, I was proud to be a Buddy Emmons Fan.

Leon I was at that seminar also along with Chas from Ca, Robin Suskin, John Carter, Lynn Stafford all from Oregon.

We had a good friend, Harley James, that could not make it. We asked Buddy to talk to him on our phone just to say hi. We dialed the number at his work, Sierra guitars, and asked for Harley.

"Hello Harley this is Buddy Emmons, yea it really is me. We were just passing through Portland and I thought I would give you a call and say hi. No it really is me"

Harley will never forget that one, either will we.

When you hear someone say "He has a lot of class" about a person, the above kind of action is what is meant.

I was at that Stockton concert. Buddy and Jeff agreed to take a picture with my infant daughter. He then gave me his address so I could send the picture to him to autograph, which he did. I proudly display that picture on my wall. Buddy is a class act for sure.

As some of you know I have a COPD (emphasyma)problem and as a result I have been hospitalized numerous times with Chronic Bronchitis, and other viral infections for the past 10 years. In Dec of 1998 I was in the Maryviesw Hospital in Portsmouth, Va. with a problem and I was so sick that I actually revealed my secret location for my "stash" to my wife in the event I didn't survive. On with the story, one day while my wife was visiting me the phone rang and I picked it up and said hello. A voice on the other end responded by saying "Hello, is this Kenny?" and I responded "Yes" and the other voice replied saying "Kenny, this is Buddy and Peggy Emmons, I was just calling to find out how you were doing and to wish you the best and to hurry up and get well." You can believe I was in shock for a few seconds unable to say anything. I finally overcame the shock and we continued to talk for a few minutes. The point I want to make is for somebody Like Buddy and Peggy to take time out of their busy schedule and call a 'nobody' just to wish them well told me that Buddy Emmons is large in other ways other than Steel Guitar. I will always cherish that moment as long as I live.
