I'll Come Running - Steel Solo With Guest Vocal

Post by Walter Stettner »

What a great song! Connie Smith recorded that song three times. The first two takes in August 1966 and October 1966 were done with strings, then finally in January 1967 the song was recorded for the third time, they gave the song to Weldon Myrick and, acc. to Connie, "he took it home and made something of it."

Weldon remembers that he "just stumbled on his part" (now, that's what I call understatement, folks! Image) Connie refers to that song as "Weldon Myrick Steel Guitar solo with guest vocal", she also used it to audition her drummers.

And that's not all: Two other artists recorded that song, letting two more Steel Guitar legends take the challenge of playing that famous ride and both (of course) succeded!

John Hugley played it with a guest vocal by Conway Twitty (album: "15 Years Ago", MCA 22), Lloyd Green had Warner Mack helping a little bit with the vocals (album: "I'll Still Be Missing You", Decca 75165) Image

Kind Regards, Walter

John Hughey also did an instrumental version of "I'll Come Runnin'" on his album "On and Off Stage", now available on CD (JHM-003CD) from John Hughey Music.

I saw and heard Johnny Cox absolutely rip it (in a very GOOD way) with Connie on the Grand Ole Opry. He did a great job of it.
That is one of the best uptempo solos I have heard.
