Hi Drew,
OK, I finally met Jon Potyrkus last night. A very talented player and a real nice guy. He showed up in Harrison MI at the benefit for Rod Raymond. Jon is playing in the acoustic country/folk/bluegrass band of Rex Raymond (Rod's son). A great band by the way, they play mostly originals. I'm guessing that Jon got hooked up with Rex as a result of the Wheatland Music Festival thing.
During their 50-minute set, Jon played some great backup and solo fiddle, mandolin, and dobro. He introduced himself to me while I was talking with Rex after they got off stage. So Jon and I got to chatting. He has moved up to Essexville MI recently. Originally Jon was raised in the metro Detroit area but spent many years out west or in Texas, I can't remember exactly. He said that he has a 1969 Emmons doubleneck push-pull at home but hasn't been using it for some time and is a little out of practice with it. I asked him if he was aware how sought-after those push-pulls are and he said no, but he's had the guitar for years and it's a good one. I really tried to encourage Jon to join up with the Michigan Steel Guitar Club. He seemed very interested, asked me where I live, and entered my phone number into the memory of his cell phone, so I expect that I'll get a call from him one of these days. When he calls I will get his address and phone number for you because he's not in the book as yet. Hopefully he will join up with us.
See you at the Grand Rapids show.
