The City of Austin just got another fine asset....Neil Flanz,Steel guitarist who inspired a whole lot of us has just relocated from FLA. " Work offers are already starting to come in".If anyone gets a chance to see Neil,do yourself a favor and go...Neil wrote one of the steel guitar
courses that got a LOT of people started. And as anyone who ever has known him will tell you,Neil is one of the nicest guys youll ever find! This man eats, breaths, and lives steel guitar every moment of every day!KNOCK EM DEAD NEIL !!!!
Good luck in Austin.

Right before Neil moved to Austin, I bought "Still Safe at Home" CD from Neil which basically features Neil on steel. It has a great version of "Wild Horses", but there is a ton of other wonderful cuts. Neil also has reprinted his original E9th course that once was on a 33 record; but, now on CD with tab. Doing a search on this Forum shows alot of well known players remember using Neil's record and have fond recollections of Neil instructing the listener to "Now mash pedals A & B" etc. So Neil's course is a classic. I use it as a companion with my other materials.
Neil was kind enough to throw in a complimentary CD that he recorded his living room. Quite a few of the folks on this Forum have also mentioned having Neil provide this also.
I keep hearing very kind words about Neil and beside the praise he has received on this Forum you can see by his feedback on Ebay that he answers peoples questions, providing help to those who are working on his materials etc.
Lets all wish Neil the best in Austin !

I'm one of those players who got started with Neil's E9th course ("mash pedals A and B"). I'm so glad that Neil is in a town that will recognize his musical talents. Best of luck, Neil!

If you are serious about the C6th neck, Neil has reprinted his C6th chord dictionary. It is invaluable as an aide to understanding the C6th neck.

Would Neil's C6 chord dictionary be very useful for 8-string lap steel? (I assume it's a pedal steel book).
I did a quick search for it on the internet and could only find a passing mention of it on a Neil Flanz page (http://www.ambrec.com/Homepages/neil/neil.htm)

I am glad Neil made the move to Austin. This is a city I that I believe will know to welcome him as the musician and the person he is. He has played beautiful things and he has a beautiful soul that allows him to keep on doing just that.
I know that Neil was toying with that idea for a long time and it took a lot of courage to do it and I hope he will find all the honest help he deserves to get started and established.
Neil, I wish you the best of luck!

Dwayne,
Neil's C6th dictionary wouldn't do you a lot of good. It is set up to find the different chords when using pedals.

I am glad to meet Neil again in Austin next month.
As a teenager,my life changed when I heard Neil play steel on"Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels,"Live 1973".
All I knew was that i have to write this person,as this had to be an angel(only not fallen).
Through Tom Bradshaw I found his adress in Nashville then,I was 14 years old,we kept writing each other, and in 2001,when I was in Texas, and Neil was in Dallas,we finally met after 20 years.
He is a great person and a wonderful musician,Greg Simmons just mailed Neil will have is gig next weeken, after 16 years.
Hope he has something,next month.
Austin is the place to be for Neil!!!!See you next month Neil!

Neil came up to me a couple of weeks ago at the Broken Spoke in Austin and introduced himself. I was plying with the Derailers V2.0. He was a pleasure to visit with, and he should be able to get a ton of work there in Austin. I ran into him at the convention on Friday. He said he already had a gig (can't remember who with). He was also telling me about his first drive up I35 from Austin to Dallas. I think it scared the sh!t out of him. ha..ha
Welcome to Texas Neil!! |

Sorry that Florida lost you -- but as I said in my last email before you left, you will be appreciated there and will do well. Texas should be proud to have you.

Hi Neil, welcome to Austin - I saw you standing in the back of Jovita's Thursday night. I pointed you out to our steel player Scott Walls and he started to recite from your instructional record. He said he learned a lot of licks from your course. I know we never take breaks at Jovita's but come by and say hello next time if you get the chance. I dig your playing and hope to play a show with you before too long.

Good luck in Texas, Neil, you'll probably run into as many Canadians there as in Florida .It'll be good to be in a state where steel guitar is appreciated. All the best.
