Merle without Norm? Like a wedding cake without the icing. Get well soon Norm - to many of us you are the sound of The Strangers.

I had already heard that Norm was not on this tour but is Hag doing without or did he get a sub? I received a little inside info on this subject yesterday and it was something to do with polyps. Maybe more on this later.

First I've heard about Norm not being on tour... I sure hope he bounces back to health real soon. Tough shoes to fill, but I hope Merle has a sub on the tour. I'm sure there are plenty of players who have learned a Norm Hamlet lick or two over the years.
Maybe Norm's friend, the old Bakersfield fireman, Larry Petree will ba along here and fill us in...

PS: Congratulations, Dave, on getting to open for Merle and receiving a nice compliment about your show.

Merle didn't have a sub for steel. I offered the tour manager my steel guitar services but he said they had it covered. He did seem appreciative though.
Merle had Lefty Frizzels old guitar player and Dwight Yoakums fiddle player and they did a good job, but I was totally missing the steel.
Like I said, I didn't get details about Norm but it didn't seem like a life-threatening illness by the way they were talking. It sounded like Norm wanted to go on tour.

I recall a few years back when Norm's wife passed. Merle appeared on Ralph Emory's Nashville Now show, without steel. As I recall, Merle mentioned this while talking to Ralph and thanked Larry Sasser, I believe, for offering to sub. Merle stated that the "steel guitarist chair" would remain vacant until Norm returned. I was very pleased with Merle's show of respect for Norm. It appears that the same level of respect remains. Very admirable!

It just wouldn't be the same with someone else on steel. It would be like the band showing up without the Hag. It took me a long time to get use to not seeing Roy Nichols. I am sure Hag gave all a great show. |

Wish I coulda been there even with Norm out...I have seen Merle a buncha times, but not for a while.
The best was at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. He did a 3 hour show with all the old background guys..(even Tiny Moore)...Great show.
The worst was at the Petaluma Fairgrounds...and he couldn't wait to get off of the stage,,he was onstage for what seemed like 30 minutes. While people were yelling for an encore we could see his bus pulling off the grounds.
This was the early 80's.
I guess we ALL have a bad day at the office sometime.

I received an update from Larry Petree saying
quote: Norm is doing fine. He goes to the doctor today, and is in hopes of getting to play the 2-day job at Buck's here in town. He is following the doctor's advice and not going too far from Bakersfield this tour.
Lets hope to see him at Buck's this Tuesday and Wednesday. It is not easy for him to not get to play the dates...

I really hope Norm is able to get back on the bus by the end of March!! I just secured a front row seat for Hag in Austin on 3/24. Thats a week and a half after the Dallas Convention, what a month!
Wishing you a speedy recovery Norm!!

I just spoke to Norm, he wants to thank everone for the concern about his health.
He is still very weak from losing so much blood. His doctor advises against working this tour. It will take a while to get his strength back. Again, thanks for the concern.
