Great Photo. I saw Zep at the Filmore East, around 1969. It was their first US tour and about a month before their first album was released.
We knew of Page from his Yardbirds stint.
Zep was second on the bill. The headliners were "Iron Butterfly".
No Steel Guitars that night. |

Can anyone see a cord coming from the Steel in the picture? |

I seriously don't believe that's Page in the photo.
Correction: I must admit an error in remembrancing. Boink!

Jimmy Page has mentioned several times in interviews that he played steel on "Your Time is Gonna come" on an old Fender pedal steel that he owned. I was unaware of the MSA, and although I saw them several times throughout their career, I never saw him play steel on-stage. I too was a big Yardbirds fan, and had seen Jimmy with them in 1968. The picture is unquestionably Jimmy Page.
Just a few months ago my wife and I went to see the re-formed and re-touring Yardbirds when they did a show here in Las Vegas. While they do not have quite the vibe of the original band the music was quite good. The crowd, however was decidedly OLD. It's rather ironic to see people coming to a rock concert with walkers and oxygen tanks. I guess it's like Waylon said "If I knew I was gonna live this long I would have taken better care of myself." |

Joey, yes I think I see the cord, you know these plug in from the back...plus I've seen a photo of Jimmy playing steel with a violin bow. I think it was this same MSA.

Hey Joey Ace, if that was the show with Delaney and Bonnie and Woody Herman, I was there also! What a small world. It was a great show. [This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 07 February 2004 at 01:55 PM.] |

Sorry Kevin, the third act was "Porter's Popular Preachers", a Black Gospel Vocal Group. Filmore shows were quite deverse then. Of course the Joshua Light Show was there for the entire evening.
Don, Page used a bow on his Les Paul.

Jimmy played it on "Tangerine" (on III) among others. I got to play on a version of "Tangerine" by Big Head Todd and the Monsters for the "Encomium-A Tribute to Led Zeppelin" on Atlantic a few years ago. Interestingly, Todd had only recently become a Zep fan. I had to break the news to them that I bought Led Zeppelin I on the day of release, and had seen them yearly from 69-75. Meant a lot to me to play on that record... [This message was edited by John Macy on 07 February 2004 at 08:16 PM.] |

"Momma Said" was another GREAT one. I have been a Zeppelin freak since day one, and I'm really not hearing the "out of tune" thing. Maybe it's just because I've listened to them so many times.... |

Great picture bro, thanks for posting it. My fave Zep song is "Over the Hills and Far away". Sounds like a pedal to me on the end there. |

This picture was taken in Manticore Studios, London, of the band rehearsing for their 1977 tour. Photo by Kate Simon. They were to use this set up for their mini acoustic set during the show with the band seated in the middle of the stage(Jones/Guitar-Plant/Vocals-Page/Steel,Mandolin,Guitar-Bonham/Tamborine). This was before everyone was doing the "Unplugged" thing. |

Back in the 70's when I was selling ZB's for a company in England, Led Zep's John Paul Jones and his roadie came into the shop. They looked at a single neck ZB and decided to buy it. The shop owner, Eric Snowball, didn't recognise JPJ and refused to accept a cheque until the roadie pulled him to one side and quietly explained who his 'friend' was. Eric saw the funny side of it and let them take the guitar away.

What a coincidence. I was just practicing to some old Zep and I did a couple of rounds of "Your Time is Gonna Come". It's not so much that Jimmys out of tune, but more like he's playing sloppy. It barely works but we're so used to hearing it that way who cares? At least he went to the steel for the right sound. |

Isnt it amazing, all the guys that play sloppy and out of tune seem to sell the most records? Jimmy Page looks cool as a moose in that photo!! Bob |
