Congrat's to Tommy! I just heard through the grapevine, and from a very good source, that Tommy just knocked it out of the park on a couple of solo's for Joe Nichols soon to be released CD. That's no surprise to me. Tommy is so deserving of the kind of exposure these kinds of sessions bring to players. Joe is one of Country's brightest rising stars and Tommy has been shining since his teens. You can be certain Joe and Tommy have long studio careers ahead of them.....Paul

Thanks very much for the heads-up, Paul. I will definitely be buying that album! I really enjoy Joe Nichol's first one--it is very contemporary yet very connected to Country music's roots at the same time. I "saw" Tommy White in action for the first time at Barney and Mary Miller's this past Saturday, on that video with Lloyd Green--wow! Very tasteful playing. He's got killer chops, but I really enjoyed his control. I am looking forward to hearing what he layed down for the album.

You guys are leaving very, very difficult examples for us "kids" to follow in the wake of...

...but by all means, don't stop, please! I love it!

Once again a brother steeler hands it out there for another steeler, and the brother hood lives on.

I'm glad Tommy is being heard more on the top fourty recording scene. He really needs to because he is such a great player and has alot to offer. I hope he was playing his Sho-Bud. Joe Nichols is a great artist.

Tommy White,

is, I believe, at the cutting edge of not only today's steel guitar, but at the very peak (at least so far) of his ability. His chops are not only spontaneous and crisp, but at a level few today will ever acheive. Bar none! I've heard Tommy play chops from Lloyd to Buddy and never miss a beat, all at either light speed or with enough soul to bring a grown man to tears. I've watched Tommy from the Opry stage side many times backing the likes of Vince on "Look At Us" only then to turn around and take a blazing solo behind Doyle Dykes that would blister your fingers. Tommy is the culmination of all the greats and an example of what steel guitar should be today instead of the Ceasar milk toast version we get on the radio way too often.

Do my remarks ruffle a few feathers? Then bring your picks and set down beside him. When you can take him on, then I'll pay attention and give credit where credit is due.

Until then, watch, learn, and listen! Not many people can play the Grand Ol' Opry stage with the ice water for blood that the one and only Tommy White has.

Tommy White, "today's real steel player." And, you may quote me.

I've been saying this for fifteen years, glad the world is finally coming around.
Paul, this comment was very nice of you to state, and the rest of you also. T.W. is very deserving of this recognition.

TW does a great solo on one cut on the first Joe Nihols CD, and it's WAAAAY outside! Kudos to TW, and producer Brent Rowan, for leaving it that way.
And having Paul Franklin braggin' on ya, too?? Git 'em, Tommy!

Paul,
Wow! What a nice post, and I especially appreciate it coming from you who has knocked many solos out of the park and continue to do so. So many of your intros and solos on hit recordings that have influenced me come to mind. As I've said before, your kind spirit is only matched by your incredible steel playing.

Larry Behm,
Just as it should.

Kevin, Bobbe and Stephan,
Thank you.BTW, I used my Fessenden.Oops, I meant to say Carter. I had the Fessenden fresh on my mind and just typed without thinking. Thus the reason for editing.Although I'm sure it would have performed just as well.

Dave,
Thank you so much. I must honestly say the 2 solos I had the opportunity to play on Joe's new CD were kept within the songs parameters, as should be. Nonetheless, I did get to play the solos. As you know, todays music and more contemperary writers requires somewhat of a less traditional style of steel at times and not to patronize, but I think we should be glad someone of Paul Franklin's calibre, intuition, knowledge and history of the instrument is leading the way,for without him on the Nashville recording scene, steel guitar might very well have taken a fatal wrong turn. By the way, have you heard Paul's steel solo on Toby Keith's "I love this bar", now that's what I'm talkin'bout! Anyway, Thank you again for your kindness and friendship.
My best to all,
T.W. www.tommywhite.net

Tommy White, my wife's favorite steel player. Tommy is also one of my heros and has been since we were kids. If I had to pick ONE favorite steel player it may very well be Tommy. You go brother.

All the time we have players of the calibre of Paul Franklin, Tommy White and Robert Randolph pushing the boundaries of steel guitar, the future of the instrument looks bright. How refreshing to see one great player acknowledging another on these pages.

I remember Maurice Anderson extolling Paul's virtues to me many years ago when Paul was up and coming.

Great post. Can't wait to hear the CD.

It's also great to see he played Jerry's guitar on the record, and to see the Fessenden start getting the recognition it deserves.

You go, Tommy...

I consider Tommy to be the best active player around. This is not a slight against Paul, but, in fairness, we hear Tommy in 'live' situations more than we do on records, whereas the reverse is true of Paul Franklin. I should add that, when I have heard Paul 'live' (once at ISGC and once with 'The Players') I've been amazed!

TW - the organic player of our times - inventive, exciting, and he never seems to run out of 'chops'. Tommy AND Joe Nichols? I can't wait.

RR

PS: Where does it say he played his Fessenden on this session?

Wow, What more can I add! Tommy's playing has knocked me out since I first heard him almost 30 years ago. IMHO, Buddy Emmons, Paul and Tommy are the 3 most complete players on the planet. Their intellectual approach to both tunings, their incredible command of technique and tone and their individual creativity is unparalelled. But since this post is in regard to Tommy, I must say that it has been a treasure to have been able to listen to Tommy over the last 15 years or so on a regular basis via TNN and the GOO. Tommy thanks for all the great pickin'. BTW, I also appreciate the gentlmanly decorum of these guys too.

What's this I'm reading... Tommy White on more nationally recognized recordings, and long term studio career? YES!! Now that indeed is great news, and long overdue!

Congratulations Tommy, and I hope we get to hear a lot more of you in the near future.
