Back in the late 60's or early 70's, There was a song that was being played on "AM country radio here in California, called "Hello Mrs. Johnson", and I believe it was preformed by Cal Smith (not Carl Smith). Does anyone know who the Steel player was? It was that song that peaked my interest in Pedal Steel Guitar. I remember the first time I heard it. The steel guitar was just as out front as the singer. I always thought it was awesome. At times, it sounded like Mooney, but........? If you haven't heard it, you should.

Hi Bob,
It's John Hughey on Cal Smith's first #1 record "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking" The first three words of the songs are Hello, Mrs. Johnson. I believe the year was 1973. Jason

Thanks Jason,

I knew it was something like that. I haven't thought about that song in years. And, now that I think about it, you're right. It was, "The Lord knows I'm drinking". I fell in love with the steel guitar in that song long before I even started playing. Thanks for the info.

Bob

P.S. As of late my memory has not been one of my best features!

Bob: When that song was hot, I was playing in Raleigh, NC. Cal and John came to town and I went to their show. I was chit-chatting with John by the stage when a security guard came up and tossed me out.

Things like this don't happen too often but a few weeks later we were in the same auditorium playing a benefit and as I was setting up, I saw the same security guard. I told our band leader, "He goes or I goes !!" To make a long story short; I had a wonderful gig and really felt good about myself. I'm getting along in years too but some feelings just never leave you.

Regards, Paul

Paul, I enjoyed hearing your story because I can relate to it also, but isn't it great though to be in the drivers seat at a later date and you know what they say...paybacks, ha ha.

Right on Paul! It is true that paybacks are a.............!
Wow! Is Cal Smith still around? I woke up this morning with that song in my head, and that is what spurned this thread. I just had to find out who the steel player was! I guess I never would have thought it was John. Most everything that I've heard him do was real pretty stuff. Not hard like in the song. The steel is what made that song though. It was good, just made better with John's Honky-Tonk-style picking.
