Before I start, let me say that fast pickin' on the steel is a great work of art and certainly takes talent. (Some would say more so than the slow crying stuff.)

But I personally am attracted to the crying steel. There is something extra special about the goose bumps that it raises as I hear those licks like Reggie Duncan done on that clip a few posts back. Nothing can tear into your heart like the steel that is behind a George Jones or Vince Gill tearjerker. To me that is what I think the pedal steel was designed for and certainly what draws the attention when a good player cranks down on the volume pedal.

Fast is great but I would just as soon reserve that for the six string player's ride.

Give me a good 15 to 17 slow slide with some pedal action over Rocky Top anyday!

Yeah, those slow rides are great! Jimmy Day, Lloyd Green, John Hughey, that's Steel!

But we can enjoy the "best of both worlds", so a fast ride on a fast song can also give me chills, for me it's a part of the deal!

Kind Regards, Walter

You wanna hear a Lloyd Green tune that can get to your deepest emotion, listen to the the E bros. "So Sad" on his latest Revisted CD w/ Jr. Brown doing the vocals.
Lloyd's instrumental rendition of this tune at th '03 SG convention has gotta be one of the most touching musical moments in Steel history.

Thanks for your kind comments, Savell.

"So Sad" by Lloyd Green is one of the most moving "pieces" ever played on pedal steel, IMHO.

I like it all though, fast and slow. I remember Wally Murphy at the ISGC in the late 70s doing "The Lone Ranger Theme" and Herby Wallace playing "Four-Wheel Drive". WOW!

(Thanks for the correction Jim. You are exactly right)

Reggie, I think you meant Wally Murphy on "Lone Ranger". He's the only steel player I've ever heard play it.
