I went down to Austin this weekend to see Redd and Ricky. I'll I can say is WOW. Those guys are so awesome. Ricky was playing Jim Murphy's Shobud D10/8. It amazes me how he just picks up some steel guitar with an unfamiliar copedant and plays like he does. What a great player, great guy, and a major contributor to our steel guitar forum.
They play at the Continental Club in Austin every Saturday afternoon. It is a rare source for some real kick-butt country pickin!!

Thanks Terry; it was good seeing you again....and FOLKS; Terry is a fine steel picker himself and BETTER yet....You should get his "Styles of Roy Nicholes" Video/Tab as it is unsurpassed in its delivery from this great Forumite.
Rick; Redd and I have recorded on several singer/songwriter CD's....some are out and some will be coming out...
Mike; the Continental Club in Austin is located a few blocks south of the river on Congress downtown.
I will say; that I swap steel guitar duties with Big Jim Murphy in playing the Redd Volkaert Shows. So depending on if Murph is in town or on the road with Asleep at the Wheel; will generally deside who's in the Steel guitar chair with Redd.
I'll also say this....>it is truly an Honor to play along side of Redd Volkaert on stage and in the studio....as I can't tell you how much influence Redd has made on me and my playing. Even coming out of several days straight on polishing parts and working on these STeels with my aweful carpel tunnel and cartilage problems in my hands and wrist(yes I'm pissin' and moanin' right now..ha)....Redd MAKES me perform and brings the best out in me.....Every song Every Show.....and I love him for that.

Ricky Davis is a "Texas Gem". He ain't for sale, trade, or any type barter. We're keeping him. I, too, have been the recepient of Ricky's expertise, and he never hesitates to give it freely. What a hell of player, "restorer" (and you can handle that any way you want to), and more importantly a super giving individual. You guys can "pump him" for info, but you can't have him.

Ricky told me he changes his copedent around frequently to make sure it keeps him thinking and on his toes. That's why he can sit behind just about anyone's steel and play it well. |
