I was wondering if there are any of the classic TV shows from the 60's and 70's (like Hee Haw) available on video. I guess there must be 1000's and 1000's of hours still in the archives of the TV stations.

I only have a few tapes, mostly private "donations" from good friends (Hi Red Kilby, hiope you're doing OK!) like some Buck Owens Ranch Shows from 66/67 (w/Tom Brumley) and a tape full of old ET shows from the late 60's (lousy quality, but Buddy Charleton is unbelievable!)

Any info or links from you guys?

Thanks and Merry Christmas to everybody!

Walter

Shanachie home video has compilation tapes from the amazing Al Gannaway "Stars of the Grand Ole Opry" shows from the mid 50's. Al Gannaway had a vision: Full Color 35mm 2 camera TV production in 1955-6 in the heart of Nashville! Right at the transition between straight steel and pedal steel. There have been other releases of this material as full shows with comedy, cloggers etc. but the Shanachie tapes are sorted by artist and feature just performances by the following:
Webb Pierce/Chet Atkins

Ray Price/Jim Reeves/ET

Marty Robbins/ET

The Chet Atkins tape is like a master class. As good as any modern instructional video, both hands visible almost all the time... wow.

You will see Buddy Emmons in the background on the Ray Price material (he was playing with Little Jimmy Dickens at the time and is about 18!)

Jimmy Day (also looking about 1Cool is playing with Jim Reeves

just fantastic stuff, but the full shows are even better... they were available for a while by mail order, but the company that was handling them messed up somehow... If anyone knows of another source for this stuff let ME know!

BuckOwens Ranch Shows are available thru buckowens.com

anybody got a source on the Wilburn Bros shows?

Hi Walter, I am doing OK. Just real busy on the Railroad. Lots of hours.
Can't wait till St. Louis!!!!!!!!

I too would like a source of how to get the old Wilburn Bros. shows. I have 6 of them but the quality is not there they are copies of copies.
I would also like to get some of the Martha White, Flatt and Scruggs shows from 1965. If anyone has a lead on these please email me.

Merry Christmas to all of you!!!!!!!!

I have the entire "Gold" set of Gannaway tapes titled "Classic Country--Grand Ole Opry Stars of the Fifties". There may be other sets available, but this set is not a good bargain. Each tape is only 1/2 hour, and when you consider that 5 minutes of that is introduction and advertising, and almost 5 minutes is square/clog dancing, they're hardly a music lover's delight.

They do offer some good quality color footage of old Opry stars, but at about $20 per tape, they're an obvious ripoff, IMHO. Had Gannaway edited all this down to 1 or 2 tapes, and sold them for $30-$40, it probably would have sold millions! As it is, I can't recommend buying them (but you can come to my house, and I'll show 'em to you).

One tape I can recommend, however, is "The Best Of Ernest Tubb". This is sold through the Ernest Tubb record shop, and contains a selection of 21 songs recorded on the old Ernest Tubb TV show, from the '60s. There's no one but Tubb singing, and no instrumentals, but the polish of the band (with a young Buddy Charleton) and the production is very evident.

Donny,

Thanks for the hint, I have the complete set also and I agree, they are very expensive for the short runtime! The ET video sounds very interesting!

Merry Christmas

Donny- I have the first sky blue set of Gannaway tapes, and (unfortunately) the gold series which are like night and day- thats what I meant about the folks messing up... the first set of 12 tapes has complete shows, all from the period, and four shows per tape, trasure trove of footage only msrginally edited. the second set bought on the faith it was like the first set - I, like you, felt ripped off big time.
Unfortunately the only other source I know of for this amazing material is the shanachie compilations....
