Hey y'all,

I got some LPs recently, and had a few questions, perhaps some of y'all can shed some light...

Who were (are) the New River Boys? They do about a dozen cuts on a 2 record set called "Country Blue Grass Jamboree", old steel tunes. (no album info)

Weldon Myrick plays (beautifully) on Wanda Jackson's "Country Gospel" (Word, 1973). Where else can I hear him from that era or earlier?

Who is playing steel on Loretta Lynn's "God Bless America Again" (1972)?

Did Buddy Merrill ever play steel in a traditional country setting, other than on his solo album?

Is anyone familiar with the tune "I've Come to Take You Home"? as performed by Rose Lee Maphis? Steel player?

Thanks for any help or info,
Carter

Hi Carter!

On The Loretta Lynn album, it's Hal Rugg, he did almost all of her recordings (her very early work has Don Helms, "Fist City" has Pete Drake on).

For Weldon Myrick: Difficult question, he played so many great recordings, most of the early Connie Smith RCA recordings, some amazing stuff with Skeeter Davis ("I'm A Lover, Not A Fighter"!), one album with Lawton Williams ("Between Truck Stops"), there's tons of good music by Weldon!

Another album (late '60s, I believe) from Connie Smith, Connie In The Country, has a lot of great Weldon signature stuff on it!

Re: The New River Boys, one group with this name was based out of Pennsylvania, and they were the "house band" for many years at Sunset Park, in West Grove. Alex Campbell, and Ola Belle Reed did the singing, while Deacon Brumfield played Dobro. They also played throughout the mid-atlantic area from the late '40s through the early '70s.

One of my fondest memories from when I was young was our weekend trips to Sunset Park. Most all the big stars (from George Jones, Kitty Wells, to Ray Price and Ernest Tubb played there every summer. It was a family music experience that I regret many younger generations will never experience. (I believe the park closed in the mid '80s.) younger

Carter, if you are interested in Weldon doing gospel with groups, then he did some killer stuff with the Rambos(Heartwarming Records 1973) and the Hemphills same era and record company. Problem is I think that these are out of print, so to speak. Buddy Merrill played with the Welk Show for many years and was featured on the show from time to time, the country and hawaiian shows. I've got several of the shows taped on VCR with him featured. I did met him several years ago and heard him play, he plays better then ever. His web site buddymerrill.com should give you more info. Donnie said that Sunset Park closed in the mid 80s.
Not so.
It remaioned a going concern until, I think, 93 or 94 when a bad snow storm caved in the roof of the band shell, and the owner, Lawrence Waltman, just didn't have the energy to fix it.

How true. The younger folks will never experience places like that. I saw my best bluegrass there, and I saw my first steel players there. It's where the band I was with opened for Twitty.
Great memories.

Winny, the park was actually open from 1940-1995. Thank you for correcting me.

Carter,

The 4 CD set by Connie Smith (Bear Family Records) covers the complete early Connie Smith, there's not only Weldon on it, several tracks also have Russ Hicks and Hal Rugg. Highly recommended!

Speaking about Bear Family Records, you might also wanna check out Vernon Oxford (Lloyd Green, Weldon Myrick) and the Farrell McCall set (Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green and Dickie Overbey)

Have fun, Walter

Donny and Winnie,
I had some great fun at Sunset park in the 80's playing shows with the Whites. The concession stand had the best cheeseburgers I've ever had! What a shame it closed.

All the food was good at Sunset Park! That was my 2nd. reason for going there between the years '54 & '67, when I finally moved to Nashville! They still call me “Big John”, for good reason I guess!
