Steel Guitar Compilations

I was wondering if there is a compilation CD out there with original versions of famous steel songs, i.e Bud's Bounce, Steel Guitar Rag, ect. Second best would be a compilation of these songs by artists other than the original. Thanks for your help. Ward

Ward,

It's a shame, but you are right! I have not seen a compilation like you mentioned on the market.
For your second choice I would recommend the Jimmy Day CD by Bear Family which has two classic albums ("Steel and Strings" and "Golden Steel Guitar Hits" on one CD, with almost all of the classic tracks given the unique Jimmy Day treatment.

www. bear-family.de

is their website.

That Jimmy Day one looks pretty good. Has a lot of the songs I want to learn. Thanks, Ward

There was one several years ago called "Stars of the Steel Guitar" or something like that. Emmons, Drake, others. Starday label, possibly.

Cal, awhile back a friend of mine saw the "Stars of the Steel Guitar" cd and bought it for me. I don't think it fits the bill as a "best of the steel guitar" cd of the sort Ward is hoping to find, but it is certainly of historical interest, with a nice surprise or two. It has some nice examples of Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day and Jerry Byrd. Of course we have all kinds of access to the best work of those guys, so the cd is not a "must have" for steel players. My favorites on it are a couple of cuts by Walter Haynes, who most of us haven't had as much chance to hear as we ought to. It has three cuts by Pete Drake, including the egregious talking steel version of "Abilene".

Bob - The only track I could remember was "Sunday In Dixie' - I think. You're right about Walter Haynes, I'd like to hear some more of his stuff.

Believe me, you won't do wrong by adding the Jimmy Day CD set to your collection. I got the LP's (used) a couple of months ago, put them on CD (via computer) and listen to them often. "Release Me" is awesome. Gonna buy the CD set soon just to have the clearest version possible.

See http://steelguitarmusic.com/music.html#collections

I might have some copies of the "Pieces of Eight" LP in the garage. I haven't gone through Tom's LPs yet.

I do have a few of the "Pieces of Eight" LPs, new and shrink-wrapped. They're $12 each if anyone wants to order one.
