That is fascinating. I shall play that to my guitar tonight, and if it can't play it, I'll have to shoot it.
Seriously, I played with a jazz combo for the first time last week, and I was struggling to find a steel tone that fitted in well. I'd not thought of such a sort of Electric Hawaian approach. I was trying for a sort of glissando vibraphone sound, playing mostly in the upper octave.
You have given me a lot to think about.
Thanks
Cheers
Dave

Wow! I have 6 or 7 of Toot's CD's here but don't have this one... Steel and Toots...what a combo!

It was just a few years ago that I had the luck to sit in front Toots at the Blue Note and handed him water from time to time as he played some of the most haunting jazz I've ever heard. What a great performer.

We got to visit with him after the show. I don't play harmonica but my buddy, Chris Bauer, sure does and spent some time with the master talking shop.

Not a commercial plug...but if there are other harmonica fans out there Chris is carrying on his family tradition. His dad, Bob Bauer, was with Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats.

thanks very much! This great stuff. It just doesn't get any better than Toots and to hear a steel guitar in the mix, well, that's jazz nirvana for me.

That is very good!
We need more versatility in our playing to get into more exposure for the steel guitar.
I used to listen to a lot Sax players,( like Charlie Ventura) Piano players,( like George Shearing) and guitar players like Charlie Christian, Tony Mattola, etc. to get ideas for the steel guitar.

Back in those days, we didn't have great advanced steel players like,Reece Anderson, Buddy Emmons, and Curly Chalker , to listen to......al

As I perused the list of supporting musicians, the name John Engels popped out.

He is a marvelous Dutch drummer that I have heard several times in Amsterdam. He's worked with lots of jazz heavies. His sister is Truus Engels, also a drummer--and singer.

I always crack Truus up when I refer to John as a "monster."

Its pretty obvious that Mr.Biel was HEAVILY influenced by,my hero, the BIG "E"! Where can this album be purchased? Will it be available on the forum? BTW,if we don't watch out,the gang (Koos Biel,Nils Tuxen,Sarah Jory,Michel Rose, etc.)from "over the big pond" are gonna leave us behind.

You all may not know or remember, for may years Toots was a top jazz guitarist. Played with George Shearing Quintet and many others through the years. What a talent. Al

You're right on that one, Smiley. At the '76 convention, during Koos' set, Buddy dragged out his guitar and played Blue Jade along with Koos. Quite a thrill for him and all of us.
