Yesterday, November 29th, was the 50th Anniversary of the recording of Webb Pierce's "Slowly", which featured Bud Isaac's moving tone style for the first time.
I can't believe nobody said anything! I can't believe I forgot until right now!
November 29, 1953 is the B.C./A.D. for steel guitar, and it slipped right by!
Let's not forget how important that record is, so let this be the Bud Isaacs appreciation thread!
Congradulations, Bud!!![This message was edited by Chris Scruggs on 01 December 2003 at 01:13 PM.] |

That original date was impressive enough for me to go out and buy a BIGSBY with Bud's set-up on one of the four necks. I played many of his tunes over the years and it was always fun to watch the crowd as I did so. |

Chris I'm sorry it was not on my calender.
Ask Chuck about the show in 2000 when I asked them to dedicate a Webb Pierce in honor of Bud who was recoving from a fall
putting up holiday lights.
Wish I had not lost the Christmas card I got.

Yes indeed b0b. And it has never been the same since. Newer players can not know the awesome happening, the first time we heard "that" sound. So many players and non players alike had no idea (including me) what was going on. All we knew was, "I must have it".
And it catapulted the steel guitar as NEVER before into a musical genre' that will live in enfamy in the hearts and souls of us who were there to watch it unfold. I sincerely hope it will not die in the hearts and souls of future generations.
For you newer players, try just the following:
Bar at the 8th fret, pick strings 4 and 5. Engage the A pedal and release; slide down to the 3rd fret and when you get there engage the A pedal again.
That lick was what began it all. That sound had NEVER been heard on a steel guitar. So incredibly new and awesome was it, that it swept country music like Elvis swept the world later.
And ALL the credit goes to Bud Isaacs.
May Jesus richly bless this dear man, and bless all of you always,
carl |

Bob Carlson,
It was RECORDED on November 29, 1953, but RELEASED a few months later in early 1954.
Or as Smiley pointed out from my original post, recorded in 1593, and released in 1594. |

It turns out pedal harp players have been doing this for a long time. I asked my harpist friend if they ever applied a pedal mid-note. She said yes, it is occassionally done, and is called a "pedal slide." I said, "No s**t! We call it twang!" Go figure.
Nevertheless, thanks to Bud Issacs for making this an irresistable mainstay of country music. That song, "Slowly", with his leads and fills, is so beautiful and haunting, I think it would have been a monster hit even if it hadn't been the first with that twang thang. |
