i hope that someone here can help me with this question .
i am working out of the mel bay easist country pedal steel book and when i play something like "will the circle be unbroken" it sounds overly simple or plunky for lack of a better word . if just seems to lack the rich fullness that i hear when i listen to some of the steel files that i have found. what am i missing ??? |

Time in the seat.....this may sound like a trivial answer, but all good things come with repetition and practice...
Seems the more you play, the better the sound and the easier it is to get that sound....so just fight through the frustrations and it will come...I promise. JO |

I would use the tab as a guide to get started, but Jeff Newman himself would be the first to tell you to "break away from the tab as soon as possible, and start to do your own thing".
If you need some fatness to your sound, try adding some reverb and/or delay, maybe even some chorus (although chorus is another thing I would break away from as soon as possible).
Also, If you have two amps, go stereo.

Calvin, Jerry and Pete are exactly right. Just give yourself some time and as you get more familiar with your guitar and what you are trying to play, the sound will come. But it takes time and practice and dedication, so don't be discouraged, it will come. |

Hi Calvin,
With respect to the "Chorus" effect, if you can take a trip to a music store that has guitar accessories, ask someone there to demonstrate how a "Chorus" effect is used to fatten up the sound of an instrument.
They can also demonstrate different reverb and/or delay settings to fatten up the sound.
It sounds like the book you are using is teaching simple single note melody at this time. Nothing wrong with learning some single note melodies, and I'm sure at some point there will be a discussion of harmony and chords.
There are some chord position charts floating around on this forum that will show what pedal and lever combo will give you what chord at what fret.
Here's one guide: http://www.b0b.com/infoedu/e9theory.htm
I would reccomend finding a live instructor to get you over the initial hurdles.
Here is a guy in your state: http://www.pedalsteelguitar.net/
There is a huge amount of instructional material out there (check the links at the top of the Forum). http://b0b.com/related_products_and_vendors.htm
And keep asking questions here on the Forum!
