...of me playing "Will the circle be unbroken". What I want is some critics, good or bad : ) . I'd also really like to know how you think I'm progressing, - been playing for 2 1/2 years on an S-10 3+3. Do you think I should stick to the steel (I don't what I should choose as my main instrument to work seriously on - guitar, saxophone or steel!) and go get a D-10 or U-12, as I'd like to try some C6th stuff! ?

Nicklas.....nice E9 playing. Advice from someone who learned the hard way, stay with the melody or close to it, because that's what the "civilians" (the non-musicians who buy tickets) want to hear.

After you are wealthy and don't need anyone's approval is the time to try to win the approval of other steel players.

Thanks guys! When improvising stuff like this on E9, I guess non-steelers would get tired real fast of my playing, but there's just so much fun to do harmonically, posibilities I haven't found on any another instrument. I just can't wait to explore all those nice chord voicings on the C6th, so I guess I'll follow your advice and keep pickin' and try and get me a D-10 or U-12!

Good advice Gene. My advice would be to play what you feel in your heart and develope a style that you can call your very own. You have advanced quite aways in two and a half years and I look forward to hearing you in another couple of years. When you can set at your steel and play something that you feel so deeply that it brings tears to your eyes, you are well on your way.

Niklas..I would stay on the Steel,, you're a fine player with a nice set of ears.

The song is really fine and you did a fine job..nice interpretation

I would ditto Gene..

Play the melody lines straight up..then improvise a bit and if ya really want to let loose , do it on maybe 1 chorus , but always return to the melody straight up.

Playing the melody lines is more difficult then playing "around" the melody. The discipline is well worth it.

I also detected a tad of "below pitch" to the keyboard. But don't feel too bad about that , I do it all the time..I've made a whole career ( like I actually have one ) playing off pitch .It just takes more practice and discipline..

Good recording as well. What steel are you playing? Sounds real pretty.

Thanks Steve! The steel I'm playing is a swedish made AWH S-10, from the 70's I think. It was DI:s straight into my soundcard and then processed with amplifier emulation software AmpliTube. Amazing software, lots of amps and speaker cabinets to choose from and quite realistic too.

Min första var också en AWH, och de är klart bra gitarrer.

I just said that Niclas is remarkably good to be just 2½ years old on steel, and not brought up in the american musical greenhouse - ain't he?
My first steel was also an swedish built AWH, and they were really good steels.

Fantastic! Stay with the steel guitar, by all means. You played "around the melody" very tastefully, and that is a gift. You have a great touch, which translates into great tone. You are doing all the right things. Keep it up!

Question for you now....I assume you were using a rhythm machine. What was it and are you happy with it?

Also, was that you on what sounded like a DoBro, too?

Keep up the beautiful work! If you really thought about giving up the steel because you didn't think you played well enough after 2 1/2 years, think again!

BTW, the guy or gal on the piano was no slouch either!

Thanks again, all of ya! I've never intended to stop playing steel, I'm just having a hard time deciding what instrument i should devote most of my time to! At the moment, it's the steel...

That dobro sounding thing was me, but It's just slide on a regular flat top. Bass and drums are midi tracks. I also recorded the 6-string and the keyboard. The same goes for that OB special clip on www.pedalsteel.tk
