Well, I finally did it! I joined up! I've been viewing the forum on and off now for a while. I'm one more notch on the ranks of the "Unknown Steeler". I started playing steel in 1976 (Sho-Bud Maverick!!!) Since then I went on to other guitars (Emmons, Sho-Bud, ZB, GFI, Back to Emmons). For the last 15 years I've been playing Mullen guitars, thanks to Buzz Evans!! He got me all turned around, twisted, confused and finally sold out on a Mullen. They're great guitars! I can never speak against Emmons or some of the other fine steels on the market. I myself just like a Mullen. I currently play a Mullen D-10 Royal Precision (8X5). I've had the privelidge through the years to pick with some hot players. I would have to say, speaking from my own experiences, that Buzz should be required to carry a permit. He's truly unbelievable!!!
I quit playing professionally in 1995. Now-a-days I'm working for what retirement I can salvage. I haven't gotten out to play in a while. There are just too many Kareoke Machines in the area. It seems like country pickers around here have become extinct. Oklahoma use to be a kickin place at one time. From viewing the forum, I don't think Oklahoma is the lone ranger.
I still enjoy pickin. I have my own studio that keeps me entertained. I've never been able to go to any of the Steel Guitar Conventions through the years. I was always playing somewhere. Mostly 6-7 nights a week. I feel fortunate that I got to make a living playing music during the era that I did. It seems like it's all in the history books for most players. Myself for sure!
Anyway, I wanted to say Hi to everyone. I plan to make some of these Steel Guitar Conventions in the near future. I'd like to meet all these great players I've listened to through the years. Now that I'm no longer married to the road, I can. I went to the convention in tulsa last year. I didn't participate as a player but I sure would like to. There are so many great players out there now. When I stumbled on this forum the first time, I couldn't believe it. This forum or technology should have existed during the Maverick years!!!
I've said too much already. Anyway, I'll be lurking around. I noticed that Gene Jones is in this area. I've never met him. If you see this post Gene, I'd like to meet you sometime. I visited your web site. I'm planning on getting my own web page soon. I'm not a computor wiz but I'm sure I'll get it established. If anyone posts a message my way, I'll surely respond. God Bless Everyone.
P.S. Bob, I'll be sending you donations from time to time! Great Site!!

Funny how old acquaintances will surface from time to time. Greeley filled in with me on two different occasions at a house gig here in Eastern Ok near Siloam Springs, Ar back in the late 80's/early 90's. The part he left out is how well he gets around on a Tele...a very credible player on both instruments. Pick one for Jesus?? That's good news..a lot of us have came back home. So Greeley, welcome....and when you get to Tulsa or Texas(shows), look me up..I'll be on with John Buffington..VP of the Tulsa club and also a Mullen player. |

Greeley, welcome! You can't beat all the great information and entertaining controversies you'll find here! Do try to make one of the Steel conventions, I'm sure it'll be a high point for you. I know what you mean though, I've been gigging every year since the last Scotty's convention I went to in '77. Don't know if another one could ever be that exciting!

Greeley, were you in the Marine Corp. down at Parris Island? The reason I asked, I sat in with a band down in Beaufort, SC and they had a Tele player who doubled on steel, and his name was Greely Stephen Bagget. And later on, he offered me a job in Chicashea, OK. Thanks! |

Fred Justice!
Thanks for the welcome! I have a sister and brother-in-law who live in Tucson. I don't get out to Arizona that often. I did manage to pass through during two different Vegas tours. I liked the dry climate!! How do I contact the Southwest Steel Guitar Association? Currently, I'm not affiliated with any . I'll be around on the forum!!
Thanks again!!! |

Larry King!!!!!
Hey!! Long time no see! I was really surprized when I got back to check the posts!
I really appreciate the compliment. I'm still pickin on my Tele. It's gotten to the point that I've been creating more levels than notes in my studio! Trying to play and record and the same time is some kind of juggling act!! Anyway, I'm still pickin and a grinnin!! Haven't been to Arkansas since the last time I saw you. Do you remember the "Station Gig"? I'd like to stay in touch with you as time moves on. Is there any chance of my getting on the players list for the Tulsa convention next year? If not, maybe I can come and jam anyway. I plan on being there regardless. Let me know. Once again, THANKS!!!! God Bless! |

Mark Van Allen!
Thanks for the welcome. I haven't been to Georgia in quite some time. I know that some of the hottest players are down south. I'll drop in on your web-site and pay you a visit.
I played with Jim Vest, Murray Price and Allen Richardson the last time I was down your way. I know you know of Jim Vest. Great player!!! Do you know Murray or Allen? Anyway, thanks again for the welcome. I'll be around.

Eddie Thomas!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was the one on tele and steel!!!!! At least, that was until you set up and began to play. After that, I remember packing up my steel and going back to the drawing board!
I can only imagine how you sound now-a-days!
I remember standing behind you on stage in awe of every lick you played. If any of you here on the forum get the chance to hear this guy play, by all means, don't miss him. He's a great player!!
Through the years I felt I had gotten pretty good. Every time you get to the point that you feel like you can play, someone else shows up who REALLY CAN PLAY!
I've had to lick a lot of wounds through the years but I eventually smoothed things out. Learning pedal steel has it's hidden surcharge!!!!! At least back then. Now-a-days we have the forum and so many other teaching aids at our finger tips. It's a shame it didn't all exist back then. Either you knew another steel player or you were left to yourself to figure it all out on your own. I think playing a tele and a 5-string banjo helped me a lot when it came to steel. At least it did for me.
Now-a-days I write and record a lot. I no longer play professionally. I still keep up on my chops the best I can. What kind of Steel are you playing now? Are you working any gigs in the Macon area?
Thanks for the post! Be sure to check your e-mail from time to time. If you don't mind, I'll send you a line!
God Bless!

Thanks for the welcome! I had entered my name on the online steelers directory but couldn't edit any change. Now it's posted twice. If you can delete both of my entries, I will update the information. I had forgotten the original password I used and couldn't get back in. If you don't get this message, I'll try to e-mail you. Thanks again!

Greely,
Now there is a name from my past. You were working the busy music scene in Lawton, OK when I was there at Ft. Sill through the fall and winter of 1984/5. I remember your six-string and steel work and a very good vocal ability. You did it all, exceptionally well! Buzz Evans worked the big club in town and had a great band. I worked with Ron and DeRay Garcia for awhile and then in a three piece group behind Pee Wee Pierson. The next trip to the Artillery school house was in 1989 and during that fall and winter, I worked for Chris Caldwell. Mickey Helton played bass and Don Cathey played guitar and fiddle.
After the active Army years, I returned to my home in Western Pennsylvania. I'm still playing quite a bit and still enjoying it. When I read your name, I just had to say "Hello". |

I too have become a new member. I hope to heck I didn't perturb Jay Dee Maness earlier this month(July). He backed up Vince Gill at the Chatauqua Institute near Jamestown, NY. I was hoping to see Sir John Hughey. When I approached the stage prior to the performance (which was great I might add) I hollered up asking who was playing the steel. Jay Dee spoke up and said he was. Then, not knowing I was talking to another of the Great Ones... I said I was hoping to see John Hughey. That's when Jay Dee told me that John doesn't tour and that he (Jay Dee) would be doing the steel, and that although his style would be different than Sir John's, I would be nonetheless delighted. I WAS FOR SURE!
I'm led to understand that Jay Dee did the steel for the Desert Rose Band's "Start All Over Again". The steel in that recording has always grabbed me by the ears and turned my head around.
This is first ever posting to this forum so I'm gonna stay brief.
Been playing & struggling since 1963 (10 years old) when my dad built me a 6 string from Oak and 1/4" steel plate (to keep the oak from bending into a "U"). His challenge was for me to play "Bud's Bounce" like Tom Brumley did for Buck Owens.
It took 40 years but now I'm close, but not on that 6 string, which holds a revered spot in my den.
Currently have an Emmons S-10, Dekeley S-10, Nashville 400, Express 112, and a DeltaFex (oh, and a Supro 6 String Lap Steel from 1965).
I think the best advice I've read on this forum to date was, during practice, to mothball the effects & just use a bit of reverb.
I also have become convinced that non-steel players are basically clueless as to where our heads are at.
Regards,
Ray Minich, Bradford, Pa.

Hi Greely, sure nice to know you're still around. I don't know if you remember me or not but I sure do remember you. Me and another guy named Dee Ray Garcia was talking the other day about how much we enjoyed your picking. I am a new member here also. I'm can't play steel I'm just a bass picker but gosh, I'm a big fan of steel. I look forward to hearing more from you. God Bless, db |
