Things are picking up from when I played down there and I'd hate to have this monster walk in the door. I seen him playing at The Stage with a Zum, Peavey LTD 400 sounding outstanding. Kevin Owens was next door at Roberts playing a whole vintage Sho-Bud rig..Professional-Christmas tree amp and volume pedal and sounding great. Kevin even has a Sho-Bud tatoo! I believe that was Terry Wendt (not sure about that last name Terry) playing before Kevin at Roberts. It's a haven for steel players on Broadway this weekend with the Namm Show in town too!

yeah, I was at Tootssies and Smiley walked in and took few pictures with his "polish camera"... ..and then he set in and jam with the band.John was at the "Legends" and Weldon was at the "Broken Spoke" so yes, what a nite,ha,?I wish it was like that all the time.I asked Sheila if she had a good time and she said:"Yes,when Smiley showed up"...she likes him a lot,but then again, who doesn`t...

Damir, nah, Joe doesn't play steel, but he loves it. He's a human jukebox, always dragging old country tunes that nobody else does. He's a blast to work with; we play at the VFW on Charlotte weekends. Come out sometime and say hi.

Damir, you go out 40W past White Bridge Rd. to Charlotte and turn right and go about a mile and it's on the right. No cover, cheap drinks, no problem parking (like someplace we know). We do mostly Ray Price, Merle Haggard and George Jones, if you like that kind of music... Winking> 8-midnight. Later,

Cal

Is that photo of the band with Jernigan et al. for real .... do they really play for tips and the venue gives them nothing?

Graham,
That's the way MOST of the clubs are on LOWEST Broadway. SOME give the band a base pay of $20,for 4 hours work,w/ ONE 20 min. break. THEN,you have to park your car in a garage,or a parking lot.($5.00 to $12.00)
D'ya still wanna come to NashVILE & be a "star"?

Nah,

I think I'll struggle on here in Sydney and get the occasional gig for $200 a player for 3 x 40-45 minute sets over 3 hours ... mind you that does happen (but infrequently) for me ... I also play each week at a rehearsal gig where the bass player gets the $50 (he has to come a distance) and everyone else socialises. Mind you, we play what we want and the gig has been going over two years now to a small but appreciative crowd.

Generally, exploitation of musicians is also the go here ... like bar deals (20% of the bar ... where the bar manager puts as much in his pocket as goes in the till). We've had a full house and received $100 or thereabouts, when you know they've taken $2-3,000 over the bar.

Look closely at the first picture. Thats Allen Jackson's bass player, Roger, playing bass. Lower Broadway is one of the cest places to hear steel guitar. Unfortunately the players are not getting paid enough. Put $5.00 in the bucket and you can here almost any steel guitar standard you want.

I don`t think that players like Jernigan or Hughey or Spicher or many others play because of money, they just like picking and that is where you can see how big their hearts are. They play because they love to.Smiley ,you forgot 5 bucks for a beer...
