Bobby Flores' new CD: Steels and Fiddles Galore!

I just have to say how thrilled I am to have been a small part of this fantastic album. It is a great tribute to the music of Ray Price that has inspired more than a few steel players over these many years. It is an honor for me to be in the company of such wonderful steel guitar players as Randy Rinehard, Jim Loessburg, Herb Steiner, Rick Price, Dicky Overby, Gary Carpenter, Jerry Blanton, and Bobby himself. I had a ball making this record while swapping licks, stories, and jokes with my heros.

I have said it before, but it bears repeating. Bobby Flores is the most talented, yet the most humble and gracious musician I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He is without peer when it comes to tradtional country fiddle. His tone and intonation are impeccable, and he plays with great emotion and heart. He is a producer's dream to make music with, and I am lucky to be able to work with him so regularly. And did I mention he plays everything with strings on it superbly, in any style you throw at him? And he sings purty good too..

Many thanks Tommy!! You are way too kind to me bro! We did have one great time recording this project together, that's for sure. I really enjoyed watching & listening to you guys all compare the different steels & set-ups, etc. It was like a mini-seminar for me but I couldn't take notes fast enough to keep up with you guys!

This is absolutely one of the finest CD's that I have in my collection. Bobby Flores is the consumate musician's musician. His talent has no bounds. In producing this CD Bobby has surrounded himself with some of the finest musicians in the Central Texas area. What a joy it must have been for each of the fine musicians to have worked on this project. The combination of these great musicians along with the superb talent that Bobby brings to the project makes this a "must" CD for everyone's collection.
Thanks Bobby for the many hours of real listening pleasure you have given Barbara and me.

Thanks Roy & Buck! I appreciate that a bunch. I'm telling you, the pleasure was mine working with and listening to these mentors of mine play like they did. Talk about a bunch of seasoned pros! It was inspiring and to have them all playing on the same album is an absolute honor.

Roy, .. I enjoyed getting to hear you play in Wichita Falls and you did one outstanding job on piano! It was also really nice to visit with you and Barbara. Hope we get to pick together soon.

I'm getting to work some live dates with Levi, usually at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon in Austin. We do studio work together usually out at Justin Trevino's studio. On top of being an excellent player, Levi also does the best Willie impression I've ever heard. It's unbelievable. Actually he does several and does them all very well.

Levi Mullen does the absolute BEST Walter Brennan I've ever heard/seen. Brennan is easy to satirize, but Levi really gets the very subtle mannerisms that you don't even remember until you see them performed.

And him singing "Seven Spanish Angels," nailing both the Willie and Ray Charles parts, is a total hoot!

…So I am standing there at work one day, trying to deal with a store full of customers, and my old friend Al Michalczak walks in, slaps this CD down on the counter and says…”I know you don’t have a lot of time these days B., but when you get a chance listen to this!” I look at the thing and think “Bobby Flores?! I didn’t know he had a CD out!! Wow!”

I did listen, and I can tell you this album is defiantly a “WOW”! If you like good country music this is just about as good as it gets. Steel Guitar? Hmmm…gee, ALL of my Steel Guitar heroes on one CD! It gets better…

I look at the “musician” credits and realize that I personally know, have worked with many of, learned from…or at the very least, know “of” every single player and singer on the CD! It made this a very personal listening experience for me.

As far as Bobby’s performance goes, Tommy Detamore said all that needs to be said. I first met Bobby when he was 10 years old and watched him bring the house down at the KKYX “Roundhouse Jamboree” singing a Freddy Fender song! Far as I know, NOBODY ever spanked him for playing or singing anything wrong. He claims that he “did” make a musical mistake once or twice…but we all thought is was a great lick so we learned it!

This CD is FULL of great steel guitar work. Tommy “D”, Rick Price, Dicky Overbey, Jerry Blanton and all the rest! I really don’t like to single any player on the CD out because they are all outstanding, but I have to give a “hats off” to Randy Reinhard. I keep thinking he really can’t get any better. Well, after 30 some odd years…he continues to amaze me! I understand what he did, and maybe even how he did it. My question is…How did he “think” of doing that right at that time?!

It has been said many times that some of the best Steel Guitar players in the world happen to live right down here in South Central Texas. Here is the proof!

I didn't know 14 songs could last for 3 hours. I finally had a chance to study the CD, being in my truck on the way to the Doc in Tulsa, absent of any outside interferences i.e. a wife who wont stop talking, dogs that wont stop barking etc.San Antonio MUST have the greatest availability of awesome players.....some who aren't on this project...Bobby's probably holding them back for the next session. To Bobby...thanks for telling me what to expect from Mr Reinhard......I see what you mean......and once again you're right.

What can i say about this CD ,,, with all the FANTASTIC musicians with there HIGHEST INTENTION to play the "Ray Price style music"(shuffles,Fiddles,Steel,walking bass,tic tac,and everything is THERE!) like the GREATS did in the "past",,,,

Thanks B., Larry and Jelle! I appreciate that a bunch guys. You know, Larry you're right! There were still other players that I wanted on this project too but it would've been an extremely long CD! I'm hoping to have them on the next one.

B. Bailey,...those KKYX Roundhouse days were fun weren't they? Brings back some great memories. I was lucky to get to hear a ton of Jerry Blanton back then especially since George Chambers was the back-up band for most of those shows. Jerry & Bert Mund influenced me a lot. Darrell was working a bunch around those Roundhouse Jamborees too and so we also got to hear a lot of Dicky as well. Another incredible monster. Don't even get me started.

You mentioned Randy,......I'm producing an album right now on a knocked-out female singer named Christine Mims. Both Randy and Tommy are playing steel on it and it is going to be one heck of an album! Lots of C6 and tone for days!! It'll be available at www.YellowRoseRecords.com (Al Michalczak & I) soon along with my CD and another one by Jim Byrom that I also produced. Jim is a great writer and is a fine country vocalist too.

I got my copy yesterday and wore it out today. A superb CD. Great fiddle sound, and a real treat to hear a bunch of different steel players, all playing their butts off. Wonderful Ray Price tunes and Bobby sings 'em beautifully. Congrats my friend.

WOW! If you are going to buy only 1 CD this year, This should be the one. The pickers are great, the selections are great, the sound is great and you will get many hours of enjoyment from this CD. Congratulations for a job WELL DONE.
