If a tabloid magazine should "Front Page" a story that someone like TED TURNER,BILL GATES, etc. had been a "CLOSET" Steel Player,What person in the eyes of the general public Such as Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, Michael Jordon etc.,would cause "STEEL GUITAR MANIA" and everybody would want one.??????Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

Saddam was a banjo picker, I don't think it has done anything for banjo pickers. One of his banjos sold on ebay a few months ago for $15,000.

Oprah actually would be very good for this.
If she went to a Sacred Steel convention and featured it on her show... BOOM.
Harrison looks like he is just having fun.

But get one cool world class personality to play steel on the Tonight Show or something that gets worldwide distribution, that would do a lot..

Get Britany Spears to have a steel in one song and in the video... or even Emmenem.
Basically it's a cross-over act with a large pop audience.
It could become a craze like hoola hoops.

Regrettably, I don't think <u>anybody</u> could pull it off. Let's substitute some other instrument in place of pedal steel, and then look at the same scenario. Suppose Oprah played bagpipes, and Brittney played tuba, and Leonardo played xylophone on TV. And suppose they were all featured on Leno and Letterman, <u>and</u> did a movie which prominantly featured these instruments. Would there then be a great exodus to the music stores by tens of thousands to purchase a tuba, a set of bagpipes, or a xylophone? I think not.

Even if it did, the manufacturers couldn't come close to supplying the needed quantities of these instruments before the fad was over and passed.

Alas, some things are just not meant to be.

So think entry level.. LAPSTEELS!!

Donny, I respectfully disagree. Maybe I'm just enchanted by the seemingly boundless potential of the PSG, but I see it as a virtually untapped source of rock n roll craziness. To me, it's like the electric guitar must have been before people like Chuck Berry picked one up. In contrast to the instruments you mentioned, it is brand spanking new. There are folks on this forum who have lived to see its invention and evolution to date. The PSG has barely left it's home in country music, and as I've heard some on this forum say, it is THE ULTIMATE Rock n Roll instrument. Not to mention R&B (see Robert Randolph or Dan Tyack), or classical (see Mike Perlowin's website). I sense a coming-of-age for the PSG. In the hands of Buddy Emmons and the like, it has become a country mainstay. Imagine what it could become in the hands of a Jimmy Hendrix or Steve Vai!

Remember Bill Clinton playing tenor sax on "the Arsenio Hall show?" I don't think folks went out the next day in search of old Mark VI's.

Yeah but what if he had been coooler I.E.
not a politition in a suit and ...
and if he played better.
Still saxes are well known, it's not a break out instrument.

The right person on TV with a cool rocked out lapsteel sitting in with and Letterman's band could cause a bit of buzz.
