Could some of you please give me some info on what is good and what is not so good about different scale lengths for non pedal guitars.
What scale length to you feel works better for your playing and why.
What length is better for slant playing or non slant.
Any info will be appreciated and informative. |

Bill,
Short scale (typically 22.5 inch). One can move up and down the neck quickly. For the same string spacing, short scale guitars are easier to slant especially the first six or seven frets. After that, not much difference.
Shorter scale length usually means a slightly thicker gage string than a medium.
Long scale (typically 26"). Tone and sustain are the main advantages. Strings will be slightly thinner than a medium scale.
Medium scale (typically 24 to 24.25 to 24.5)This is the happy "medium". Most PSG fit this scale.
So it comes down to speed up and down the neck, ability to make good slants, and tone and the ability to sustain a note.
There have been past threads about the Stringmaster and the pros and cons of scale lengths. Do a search and you will find a lot more.
The ability to slant depends on the scale lenghth, and string spacing. Also, most guitars taper the string spacing from the bridge to the nut. (just to keep things interesting!)

I get my best “Uh~” sound on a short-scale. (22.5”) w/standard PSG string gauges!
