I bet a lot of steelers would think playing in Nashville is a lot of fun but I envy you guys in Texas at the dance halls and Western Swing festivals and the like. What kind of gig would be the most fun for you to play? |

I just got back from 5 days in Austin and I would go with Texas all the way. Watching Ricky Davis trade licks with Redd Volkaert in a small club on a Saturday afternoon was truely a beautiful thing. I'll take Dale Watson, James Hand, The Derailers, Cornell Hurd, James McMurtry, etc over Kenny Chesney and his pooka beads any day of the week. |

I like outdoor gigs here in Northern California in the summer. That's why I live here. Second to that is concerts in large rooms.

I have found NYC to be the most fun. Over any given month I'll play a slew of old time jazz and Hawaiian gigs on my Stringmaster. And on my pedalsteel, a couple rock concerts with some indie kids, bar gigs playing Sinatra tunes, a few gigs with Hem and maybe some new music improv or composed gigs or I'll end up on stage with a bunch of African dudes. Oh yea, and then all the singer/songwriter gigs.
Sometimes I'll even get a call for a country gig !
Some of the best musicians in the world are here. Its a great music town. I never know what I might be called upon to play when I answer my phone.

For my money, Quihi, Texas was more fun than I've ever had....Roger Edgington and Billy Mata's band was the best value received for the five bucks I spent...Texas also has a place at Granger called the Cotton Club and Steakhouse.....another awesome and fun place. It was there I first met Bobby Flores.I moved to Nashville in January 1967 with a gospel group. There are lots of good memories but on the whole, as far as my musical tastes go, I wouldn't trade the whole town of Nashville for one night in Quihi. |

The most fun I've ever had was at Deemen's Den on Broadway in the 70's with a dance floor full of other steel players and a cold beer at my side. Especially during DJ Week in October. Back then we played a lot of instrumentals. Emmons or Day might stagger in; you never knew who might show up.
A close second would be playing a Ray Price shuffle with a cold beer at my side in almost any Texas dance hall (Gilley's, The Broken Spoke, The Dixie Club).
Ahh, the good ol' days...

It's hard to beat them ol' Texas dance halls...I've played some really fun gigs in a lot of great towns/states/countries, but "there's no place quite like Texas on a Saturday night"

To my regret I haven't been to Texas... YET.
But I did live in NYC for 5 years and when it comes to music there, like food,
I must quote the Eagles "Everything, all the time"
You name it and it is played well there.
More of the finest players I have ever seen and/or played with were there.
I..... miss New Yaawwwk! Paris seemed sooo slow in comparison. |

For me the most fun ever was playing besides Jay Dee at a recent gig with my band- almost forgot my own name)))))))))~ a couple times I had to stop playing and singing altogether because I had so much fun just listening to him~~ a dream come true for me~~ he came down a day early to shoot the follow up video which we just finished shooting today~ there is such a tremendous amount of information that he shares so willingly that I know it will be well received~~ (problem is Kevin and I have yet to tab it!)
