I did a "country recording session last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. When I walked in the engineer and about everyone involved was 20 years younger then me and a little confused about what I was! But after I setup and played a little they were totally enthralled with steel guitar."we've never seen one of those" was a comment got me to thinking...Is there a whole group of people a whole genre of music that is missing out on one of the greatest instruments in the world????These kids fell in love with all that I could do on then they added there touch by putting their own personal touches to it (Wild sounding effects)This is not the first time this has happened. Anybody else had this experience?
I think Robert Randolph is just the tip of the iceberg!!! |

Nope never had that happen to me here in Texas; and I've been in hundreds of different studios around this state....
I can see how the younger generation that is not familiar with the style of music that the steel guitar is mostly familiarized with; may not know what it is or what it can do.
But I agree; that one should knock on all doors of music and let them hear what a steel guitar can do to enhance their music>young and old.
I also am on a dozen CD's that are not anywhere near country music....and these young rockin'/punk/regge/bluesy/jazzy/acid dudes just love it when they hear what I did with their tracks.

I am in california and do sessions for rock bands every now and then, and the same thing happens to me, the guys are just in awe, once i explain how it works and tell them its not a lapsteel or slide guitar they are always so happy with what I do, and to tell the truth Im not that good, I just know what rock guys want from a steel, also I am pretty good at tone so Ill do some things they dont expect, give them the french horn effect and they love it every time. |
