Do any of you steelers, or others, have a story to share about Southern California's guitar picker Lou Martin? Lou has performed with the likes of Jack Tucker, Billy Mize, Jimmy Pluett, Cliffie Stone, Wynn Stewart, Tex Williams, Patsy Montana, Freddie Hart, Eddie Dean, Billy Armstrong, Johnny Bond, Red Rhodes & Ray Sanders.
* Lou is quite ill right now, and we are having a surprise Benefit on March 16th, 2003 (please see "Events and Announcements" for details.

Hey Slim,
I saw your post on the Events side and responded to it over there but I'm here now so I'll do the same. Lou Martin? I knew him for many years while I was in SoCal and he was a well respected guitarist for sure. I'd like to get an address where I could send a donation and a card to him. Lou was always ready to help out at other folks benefits and was a great help. While I was with Clark Rohn band, our fiddle/saxaphone player Hank Cochram had cancer and we had a big benefit for him at the DJ Ranch. Lou came by and stayed all day and helped out on guitar or bass or anywhere we needed him. I have a cassette tape made that day which featured Lou on guitar, me on steel, Danny Michaels (the guitar player) on keyboards, Carl Scroggins on bass, and Leo J. Eiffert on drums. Jack Tucker, Lou, and Barbie Mathews do some cowboy songs in 3 part harmony which are awesome to say the least. The last time I saw Lou was shortly before I left the west coast. I went to a nice little club where Lou was doing a duo with Barbie Mathews. I think it was in Downey. He was (is) also a great vocalist as well as guitarist.....Have a good 'un...JH

I only met Lou once. It was at the invitation of his occasional partner Barbie Mathews, whom Jerry refered to in his post. Barbie and I had worked together a few times and I was madly in lust with her (as was every other picker on the circuit.)
I was very impressed with Lou's playing.
Later, the owner of a club called the Foxy lady decided who wanted to hand pick a set of musicisans for a house band, and she picked Lou to play guitar and me to play steel, but at the time I had another gig and turned down the offer. I think Lou did too, probably for the same reason. Her hand picked band never materialized. Instead she hired a guy named Mike Posey, whom I had previously played guitar for. Mike had a lead guitarist named Denis Alvino. They played at the club 6 nights a week for a couple of years.
Denis lives about 5 miles from me and we see each other occasionally. |
