Big Jim Murphy stands when he is playing non-pedal - that's what he's done when I've seen him play anyway. And Junior Brown stands to play his Guit-Steel.

Most likely, most of the older familiar names have done so at one time or another. The job they're doing, the style they're playing at the time, the kind of guitar they're pickin' on........all affect the answer.
Another way of looking at it...how many steel players that play standing up this day and age, have ever sat down to play? Hummmmmmmmm.

John Ely, formerly of Asleep at the Wheel , plays mostly non-pedal.
Also Cindy Cashdollar of Asleep at the Wheel, plays standing at a gorgeous Remington non-pedal guitar.

Melinda,

Kayton Roberts who played with the late Hank Snow of The Grand Ole Opry for years and Johnny Cox. I heard Johnny playing with ET about 1980 and boy could he rip it on the standup. Of course he's pretty good on about anything in the steel guitar line-up.

However, in my opinion Jerry Byrd is still the Master of Touch and Tone of the Standup Steel Players. Bud Tutmarc runs close to Byrd in a Gospel/Hawaiian style too.

May GOD bless you!

Say Jody...have no personal knowledge about this, but I seem to remember in my research a couple years ago on the Comets that the best known steel player for the group was Billy Williamson...does that sound right to you?
