Those pictures are not of the real Linda Ronstadt because she never wore shoes;___or maybe it was panties she never wore. It's been a long time; I'll have to ask the mayor of Oakland, CA. |

Herbster,
The most endearing sobriquet I've ever heard was laid on Lester Young:
" A Pixie with a Blowtorch "
I'd revel in it.

I remember hearing about Herb when I moved to California. I believe he went under the name of Pixie Zassoff. |

You might be thinking of leprechauns. Pixies can generally be of any ethnic and/or religious persuasion. For example, there's an obscure old Yiddish rhyme that goes something like this:
There once was a pixie from Austin,
Who looked like a rabbi from Boston,
But he played pedal steel,
With gusto and zeal,
And for lunch he ate borscht and lochshen. [This message was edited by Tom Olson on 21 December 2002 at 07:29 PM.] |

Of the Stone Poney's of 1968 mentioned in the article:
John Forsha, guitar; unknown whereabouts
John Ware, drummer; still gigging in New Mexico, California, etc.
John Keski, bass; aka John London passed away 2000.
Herb Steiner, steel guitar; wowing us all still.
Bill Martin, piano. unknown whereabouts.
When people talk about early country-rock influenced acts, Ronstadt's name comes up, but the live acts she worked with that helped shape her sound (pre-Eagles) rarely rates a mention. |

Jason
Wow, I didn't think that I'd be correcting YOU, of all people, but here's the skinny on the bass players.
John Keski was, and as far as I know, still is John Keski. John London was a different human being. Keski played bass with Linda in early 1968.
In the latter part of 68, John London left Michael Murphey/Boomer Castleman's band (the Lewis and Clark Expedition), to join Linda. He later joined his old buddy Nesmith, along with John Ware and Red Rhodes, in the First National Band.
John London's real name was John Kuehne. He originally was from San Antonio and came to California with Michael Nesmith in the mid-60's. He came back to Texas and, like me, became a newspaper advertising sales manager under his real name, first in San Antonio, then in Corpus. He passed away from a heart attack in Corpus a couple of years ago.
John Keski and I, after Ronstadt, played in the country cover bands around LA. When I moved to TX in 1972, we lost contact. He did work with Lee Michaels in 1969.
John Forsha lives, as he has for years, in South Pasadena CA. For a long time he worked for BASF. Though I haven't talked to him in probably 25 years or more, I made a call to him tonight and I expect a call back tomorrow. Do a Google search on John and you'll get a history of folk music in New York and LA in the early 1960's. Great stuff, and more later. I'm contacting some guys I haven't seen in 35 years.

I'm on a roll tracking down old running mates. Got an email into Jesse Lee Kincaid, who was Taj's picking partner in 1964. I went to high school with Jesse's kid brother Quentin.

Herb might not be a pixie today, but ypu should have seen him 40 years ago when we played together.
Some sad news. John Forsha recently had a stroke, and accrding to the person who told me, (a recent bandmate of his) is not doing at all well. I don't know any details.

BTW, when Herb and I played together, it was in a bluegrass band and Herb played the mandolin. Most of you probably don't know that besides being a fine steel player, he is also a crackerjack mandolin picker. If he chose to do so, he could work as a mandolin player in any of the nation's top Bluegrass bands. |

Herb, I'm slipping man!
Totally mixed up the John bassists there, I canna say any more on that topic excpet thank you Mr. Steiner for correcting that gaff of mine.
Herb, who else was in the country cover bands thing with you and John Keski.. did you guys play with any older pickers?
Herb, I think I might have an email contact for Gary Marker who played bass for Jessie Lee & Taj.
Let us know how John Forsha is doing if you get the chance, I hope he's not doing as badly as Mike heard. |

P.S. Herb, I ran across a Arizona based guitar player who worked with Dave & Lu Spencer's band in 1966-1967 with Eric White, Stoney Stonecipher (not the Fourmite but a drummer Herb worked with in 1970), Jerry DeMers and others.
No sign of Dave Spencer or Stoney though. |

Jason, is the Eric White you refer to the bass-playing brother of Clarence and Roland? Just curious. |

I believe Herb played mandolin on "Silk Purse", in fact. Which was one humdinger of an album. |

I played mando on "Hand Sown Home Grown."
Tom
Eric is Clarence and Roland's brother. They have a sister also, around my age. Their dad, Eric Sr., was a great man who loved his kids. I knew him when I was a teenager and taking guitar and mando lessons from Clarence and Roland.
