Gentlemen, I rarely post here but often browse the forum to see what is happening.
Since my name has been mentioned on this subject at least three times, I need to clarify some things regarding the video taping of steel players at the Gospel Steel Show here in INDY.
When we first decided to do this 1997, we checked out all of the legal issues and then began to ask the players if they would allow us to video their performance for possibly using some of their songs on a two hour edited video that would be for sale to the public. The show is about 16 hours in length, so we always have plenty of good ones to chose from.
We have always had their consent and there has not been any problems with the way we handle it. If any steel player would express a desire to not be taped, we would simply stop the recorders and wait until their performance was over.
We offer each steel player an opportunity to buy the videos wholesale from us sell them at retail wherever they go. It gives them a chance to make a buck or two and we get the videos out to the public that way.
We use a six camera array and a mixer at the show. The sound is mixed separately from the house sound and then is put on the raw masters. We use 16 mikes throughout the stage for control of the sound.
The man who mixes the sound is a professional who does sound for two TV stations here in the INDY area.
The final editing and effects are done by me and I take a lot of time trying to get it as good as I can so that each of you can enjoy it. Out tapes are copywrited and therefore legally protected from piracy. That doesn't mean some scoundrel will not try and make a copy of the video, but we have not any known problems of this happening.
The main objection from the pros that I have talked with is that someone will set up a camera, record the performance thru the camera mike and try to market it, or at least make copies(very poor quality) and give it to some of their friends. We have heard of this happening a couple of times, but not at our show as we DO NOT allow anyone to video our show except our own camera men and we have complete control of that.
Carl's situation in Atlanta was very different, as that problem was basically stirred up by one person and then he got two or three others to go along with him. I felt very sorry for Carl as he did not deserve the mess that this player caused.
All I can say is we have taken care of the legal problems with this and abide by the wishes of the players that come to our show, but up until now we have not had any, I repeat, not any steel player refuse to let us video their performance. For those of you who know about our show, know that we have most of the top pros here.
Also this avenue of income helps us be able to pay for many more pros to come and play that otherwise we could not afford.
I am very proud of the quality of the video that we produce and apparently our pros are happy with it too as many of them sell the videos at their tables.

I have deleted a long post. After I posted, I remembered a passage of scripture,
"Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord".
So I deleted it. God KNOWS the truth.
And so it is. What Doug said is correct. I shall forever leave it there.
God bless Doug and all of you,

My heart goes out to you Carl. I remember the fiasco well and resolved that we would not allow one player to stir up so much trouble. In fact, two of the others that he got to go in with him have since been to our show and are selling the videos.
You are absolutely right by allowing the Lord to take care of it.
God bless you Carl. We miss you.

Thanks, Doug...
Now I get it.
Thanks for sticking with the video at your shows. I wish you contined success with it.
Personally, I think any player refusing to be video taped has a little to much ego and not enough horse sense to offset it. Granted, I don't depend on performing to make a living.
The steel guitar shows are special to all of us. To all those who make them happen, my hat's off to you.
