Can someone please point me in the right direction on how to properly put new strings on without breaking them? I was able to find some Ernie Ball singles locally. I'm tuning my Maverick S-10 to a piano and mostly having trouble with the top 4 strings. My new set of Tommy White Jagwire strings came in the mail today and I thought I would ask for your help before I break them. Thank You. |

Mike,
If your breaking the top 4 strings it sounds to me like your tuning up to high. Remember that your G# string (3rd) is the highest note on the guitar and the other 3 are lower than this note. Also make certain that you are using the "middle C" on the piano. I normally use 2 tuning key spaces for wraping around the posts for every string with the exception of the 3rd which I use 3 tuning key spaces. The Carter web site has a little video on changing strings as well to help you out if you need it. If by chance your doing everything right then check for burrs at the tuning key holes, although to break the top 4 strings I doubt that all 4 would have problems with them.
Hope this helps.

Mike, on the Maverick, the pedals down notes are tuned with the tuners at the keyhead. The open notes, on the strings which are acctivated by pedals, are tuned with the screws on the right end. Try this, back off those tunig screws on the endplate, then tune the basic open notes, all strings, at the keyhead. Go back to the strings raised by pedals, with pedals down, tune to the correct[raised] notes, using the tuning keys. Now go back and, pedals up, using the screws on the right end, tune the open string notes. Good luck.

A good rule to go by here Is If In doubt...try the lower tuing first. There are all kinds of grips you can use as you tune the strings to hear where your at. For example. 3 & 4 strings, 3,4 & 5, 4 & 5. Do that all the way up as you tune and if one Is low you can bring It up an octive.
I'd never be able to tune mine without my BOSS TU-12 tuner.
